A Modular Ed-E

It was a strange thought I had playing New Vegas but I had wondered what would happen if Ed-E, like other companions, could use some of the weapons you give him.

Imagine if you could have Ed-E using the effects of various Energy-based weapons such as...

The Alien Blaster

Pew Pew

All the Sonic Emitters

The Holorifle

The LAER

The AER14 Prototype

Tri-Beam Laser Rifle

All the plasma weapons.

You could make it like the other companions where they default to the most powerful compatible weapon in their inventory or maybe in his case you have an added option of "Do you wish Ed-E to integrate any of the following Energy Weapons into his assault relays?"

I just thought it would be a cool idea.

You'v probably noticed that no other creatures use discreet/separate weapons except ghouls & SMs (limited subset of human weapons), they simply aren't set up to do so. Bots weapons are intergrated, and part of the model itself (although I am working on a feature for the Sunset mod that allows you to wield dismembered robot arms/weapons). An example is ED-E him/her/itself. When ed-e is upgraded it's not just a new add on for the armor or weapon, but a whole new model and a whole new ed-e (there's actually 3 separate ed-es, that are used depending on the players choice of upgrades).

If you did it the way the developers did you'd have to have a separate ed-e model for each weapon and ed-e variant, then swap a new ed-e in with each weapon change etc. I'm sure you can see how problematic that would be (inventory, current AI behaviors, all kinds of things are impacted).

Anyway.........

I was working with a different method involving niVis controllers for a separate project (sunset) involving bots wielding western firearms;

And I had plans for upgrading the lonesome road eyebots to hold objects in a LR expansion I'm working on, since it looked like their appendages have a energy field that could possibly used for manipulation. And I have a sunset eyebot (K8-E cowgirl) I'm in the process of making. Long story short, I'd use the same process to setup multiple weapons on ED-E.

Realistically I think this is *the* way to do it, but one could create say 3 dozen models and try to integrate them into the companion dialog quests via whatever common denominator the quest uses (maybe voice type or something else, been a while since I looked). Remember you need 3 models for each weapon, so ed-e stock with pew pew, ed-e armor upgrade (BOS) with pew pew, ed-e weapon upgrade (Follower) with pew pew. Wash, rinse, repeat.

*However* I'm swamped and I don't know when I'll have a chance to do any serious modding

Interesting. The Sunset Sarsaparilla Eyebot with the minigun and Sunset Sherriff look really good. The Sunset decal on the Sherriff especially is class. And I'm actually quite surprised how good a minigun sticking out of an Eyebot is. You should hang on to those two and earmark them for a future project, or just upload a simplified file of them. For example, I would love to replace the Sunset securitrons with your Sheriff, it would add a great vibe to the Sarsparilla location. The Minigun Eyebot would be a bonus. I really like those two, they have bags of personality. And that's usually quite rare.

I can't take credit for that it's just the nuka decals re-textured.

All of the bots from the pics above are from/for a large project called Sunset Sarsaparilla's Wild Wild West World. Essentially a western themed amusement park.

The protectron is actually a bandit, but it's a little difficult to see his bandanna since it's black.

In the project I linked to above, I do have a revamp/revision of the SS head quarters, but most of the mod centers on the amusement park itself.

Thanks, I'm rather fond of bots.

No other bot can replace my Ed-E, he's just too adorable ^^

Yep he's a freak'n adorable bucket of bolts, not to mention a hero. He sacrificed himself to save 100s (maybe more), when most of his/her/it's existence was spent getting kicked around by humans.

To be fair, that was a duplicate.

The original Ed-E was safe and sound in the Mojave. ^^

Weak. ED-E/LR was a separate and complete consciousness, that showed fear, bravery and a highly evolved sense of morality. If a twin sacrifices him/herself to save others, no one says "To be fair, that was a duplicate". ED-E/LR wasn't some remote controlled shell.

ED-E/LR gave up his/her/it's existence to protect humans, the same race that, most of the time, have been trying to kick the crap out of ED-E. How many humans would do that for people s/he didn't even know? Maybe it was knowing the few humans that weren't trying to kill it (his/her/its creator, the courier, etc) that made the decision to sacrifice itself worthwhile.
