I played System Shock 2 (a great genre-bender of a shooter/RPG) long before I picked up Oblivion. A few things are a bit creepy, but when all is said and done "scary" just isn't the word I'd use to describe it. The bar has been set a wee bit too high for me. I do get a bit of a rush sneaking around dungeons trying to avoid getting in fights, though, and there is a certain "ooooohcrap" feeling when something with 3x more health spots me anyway, but nothing resembling fear.

"Scary" is hearing a cyborg midwife around the next corner right after reading in a log where the $^%$ things come from, or being chewed on by an invisible annelid spider, or using up that last hypo right before running into a cyborg assassin...

Wow, I did NOT now this was so popular with getting scared in Oblivion...I know what you all are talking about, big time!! :(

Although...some of your comparing is kinda strange... DOOM 3?? FEAR?? I think personally the most dreadful "scary" games of all times...The scripted girl in FEAR is just plain silly...there was although one part of it...

(maybe spoiler ahead for thoose, not playing FEAR)

In your first trip through the vents the girl pops out of nowhere and crawl towards you...screamed like crazzzyyyyy :P

Now for DOOM 3...Sucked balls...plain and simple....wasn't scary at all....scripted teleporting spawning everywhere....Thats what I like about Oblivion :D a lot of surprises everywhere

I'm still only a kid and not used to seeing "scary" things. In FEAR it was mainly the first few bits cause having a gun and knowing that nothing ever actually happens seems to lessen the mood. Doom 3 was not to scary except when things jump at you or move unexpectedly. So I guess most of my being "scared" problem is me just not getting used to seeing such things or just a horrible demented mind that can't handle things. I dunno either way.

I don't mind Doom3, Fear scared me a little, so did Suffering. For Oblivion, I still jump a little if I'm in a dungeon and my torch goes off, its the noise that screws with me...tbh I think it was deliberate on Bethseda part to make the sound of a torch going out sooo loud.
