That's because you have Win7/Vista and you have installed Oblivion to the protected 'Program Files' folder structure (default), and Windows pushes your data files to a virtual store. Your best bet is to uninstall Oblivion and reinstall outside of Program Files -- somewhere like C:\Games\Oblivion .

Well I don't think that was the matter - I'm at Win7 and I'm installing stuff always at Program Files. But I haven't tried installing at Program Files(x86) - this is default installation path.

Turning UAC off leaves a back door open for virus to get in. The first thing a Trojan usually does when you manage to get one is to attempt to make a change in the program files folders to allow its virus to block your antivirus program so it will have full control. UAC prevents this.

BEST solution - install the game outside of the program files folders - I use C:\Games\Oblivion. and C:\Games\Fallout3. For steam, you will need to reinstall the steam client outside of the program files folders C:\Games\Steam works for me - all steam games will then be outside of the extra protection of UAC

Second best. Just unprotect the game only while leaving it in the program files folder. This will work until MS makes another update that changes something relating to UAC and protects it again.

Worst - turn off UAC

What bben46 says, guys. I'm running Oblivion on Vista and I'm something of a security/privacy nut. As much as I hate UAC this is your first line of defense and it should never be disabled except in the case of machines that are not connected to the Internet, even indirectly through a LAN, and on which you never install software that you can't personally attest to being clean.

When I first played Oblivion I made the mistake of just choosing the default install location. Even with UAC turned off after that, I ran into difficulties, and wound up having to uninstall it and re-install elsewhere. Now ... no such problems and I can leave UAC on.

TheStrike1k0, you're playing with fire. Trust me. I know enough about hacking to know that there are ways of thwarting even the best anti-virus software. You might not have been bitten yet (or maybe you have and you just can't tell), but it's not a matter if if ... is simply a matter of when. Your lack of concern is your worst weakness and the hackers' greatest strength.
