I need ideas for a not fighting based "dungeon"

I need a puzzle (or at least not fighting) based new interior, and it has to be about fire. With puzzle I also mean dodging flying things or walking over a crumbling bridge for example. So not really puzzle, more like action. Action which doesn't include fighting.

So can anyone think of an interesting (short) challenge which is about fire? The goal is to get a key.

It's for my quest mod based on the game golden sun, if you wanted to know.

Screenshots (some are old, things have changed)

I've tried the official forums already, not much came up. I'm sure some people here will know something...

An idea that I came up with. I put in in a mod but never uploaded it.

There is a type of fire called opnlargesmoke or something similar. It belches out a huge cloud of smoke which is primarily for aesthetic value. You can however put it to a prctical use. If you turn the fire on its side, the smoke will spew forth in a diferent direction.

What I did was:

1. Made a huge bonfire (in a cave) with several smoke spewing fires.

2. Pointed them at the tunnel that led to that room

3. Filled that tunnel with all sorts of traps

4. Put some log traps at the end, floating in the air so they drop on the player.

In practice, the smoke completely obscures the player's view and they cant see the traps in the corridor.

Also, how about a wall of fire that requires significant fire resistance to survive walking through.

A few other ideas.

1. A locked door which needs a key. The key is a fair distance away and weighs 200lbs

2. A dark room with a bottomless pit so that you need night eye to see the path across.

3. A very slow, but completely invincible and horribly powerful enemy that the player must sneak past

4. Switches that must be shot with magic/arrows to open a door.

5. A huge pit with various platforms going down. The player must choose the right platform to fall on to next to reach the bottom ie. the closest. But make farther away platforms bigger so as to confuse the player

I spend huge amounts of time thinking up stuff like this. It's nice to put it to some practical use

I've sort of done number 1 of your few other ideas. But the distance isn't far, there are just multiple keys. There is a hint that could show you the right one though.

Thunderstorm outside right now... I love em..

I'm going to play with the CS, see if I can find anything interesting...

Edit: i'm probably going to do this: You know those things in oblivion towers (other than the main tower of the plane) that go up and down using a switch. They are called corpse smashers. This thing will slowly go down, into the lava. The player will have to be fast. What he has to do, I don't know yet.

But just keep those ideas coming!

I don't know the game you refer to so perhaps we could talk on MSN sometime. Would any of these ideas fit?

To reach the key you need to cross lava for which you need a special potion. To get to the fire protect potion you have to jump between pillars which are over a firey inferno. You need a map of how to jump the pillars because the area is too big to see the other side. If you jump on the wrong pillar it could teleport you back to the start or to a timed fire trap cell. To get the map you need to negotiate a maze. This could also be timed against a machine of firey doom or some other fire based catastrophe. Maybe the maze tunnels will be blocked by lava? If you have a special fire ring the correct path is illuminated. To get the ring you have to descend into a fire pit and run to the end and back in a specific time.

Any or all could be used. Mix and match.

Might want to take a look at some of the dreamworld stuff, those were fairly entertaining. Since there are two types of fire, one that burns you, and one that doesn't, you can use those in a similar way to some of those little touchplate mazes. You could also use some switches and stuff to turn off/on fire that would be blocking the player's path. With a little creative modding you could use collision boxes or something to create a walkway over a pit of lava, kinda like the last crusade, a leap of faith... Put some bones and stuff nearby for people to try tossing onto the walkway in order to find it.

I guess alot of it would depend on what static set you were using. Some of the sets tend to be a bit more specific in how they can be arranged compared to others. You should probably use traps and stuff that fit with that set.

Jumping from pillar to pillar.. Pillars that constantly move up and down... Fireballs shot from somewhere strong enough to blow you away (It can actually do that).

Lava that goes higher and higher would be nice, but I don't think that's possible.

Oh and the idea I had in my previous post will be used elsewhere.

Thanks guys, i'm full of ideas again!

edit: This is what it will be. There is a bomb that gets hotter and hotter. You get a certain amount of time to cool it down by activating several switches, before it explodes and kills you. One of the switches is behind some pillars you have to jump on, which have some traps around them. I'm not sure about the others yet, but i'll keep this thread in mind.

Ow. I hate those action-based things. I always lose and explode.

Hidden trapdoors, illusions (like noclip, but controlled), a large tunnel (vertical) where the player had to hit switches in order to slow down (to avoid a nasty pit at the bottom)

I like the arrow-triggered switches.

Must try that out in my Gemhavens project. Thank you, WarKirby!
