Blue screens of death upon loading saves

Good day everyone,

As of yesterday, I have started playing Oblivion. After having played about every single good game that came out in the past year(s), I thought it was time to give myself the pleasure of experiencing this piece of magic, even though I have some issues with looking at relatively bad graphics these days. (Not saying they are bad for when they came out, of course).

Well this isn't related at all, so lets get to the point.

If I exist the game and try to load a saved game, I get a blue screen of death. The error message I get is always page fault in non paged area. This is without any mods whatsoever, or with a ton of mods. No difference.

This is with every single save file. Whether it is the quicksave, the autosave (I've disabled that after reading about the crash prevention etc.), the normal saves or even a downloaded save file from this website. I have tried the method described above about the corrupted saves, no success. I'm really not sure what to do at this point. I've done a clean reinstall too, no success. It might be worth noticing that I am using the game of the year edition, and that I have quite a few of the DLC's. I also have the latest version, of both the official and the unofficial patch. (Happened before installing the unofficial patch too).

I have to note that I died once in the tutorial, and loading a save game then didn't give me a crash, which is a bit odd.

I've added my boot order from Bash and a DXdiag to his post, in case that helps.

I really hope there is a solution to this, as this game has a reputation well worth the effort.

Edit:

Interesting find.

I found out that if I load a game, while being inside a game (read: I have to start a new character and then load a game) the game doesn't give me a BSOD! It works just fine that way.

Still, it's quite an annoyance to start a random character every time I want to load a game, but it's a start nonetheless.

Also, I wrote down some more details from the BSOD, not sure if they might be useful.

Technical Information:

Stop 0x00000050 (0xFFFFFADF67CED4E, 0x000000000000000, 0xFFFFFADF92692612, 0x000000000000000)

Adress FFFFFADF92692612 base at FFFFFAD925EA000

Date Stamp 47b109d5 (figured this isn't useful, but still.)

Thanks in advance,

K

Uninstall Oblivion and reinstall it outside of the protected Program Files folder structure, somewhere like C:\Oblivon\Games. Make sure your saves are in \Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Saves\ .

Hm, I'll try that. You think that's really gonna make the difference? That would be great I guess. Too bad I'll have to install all the mods again, but if works, it's more than worth it.

For the record, the saves are located there, but I assume you were just making sure.

With the Fault In Non Paged Area, it is almost always an application or game trying to access memory areas with insufficient rights. While turning off UAC and giving programs Administrative access can often cure the problem, with games especially, it is FAR better to install them outside of the protected folder structure.

And yes, I was just making sure about your saves..

Well, I did as you recommended and reinstalled it into a folder outside of the program folder structure (C:/Games/Oblivion), but it made no difference whatsoever I'm afraid. Still get the BSOD, just a few seconds after the loading screen pops up when loading a saved game, or clicking continue.

Edit: Also, I guess it's correct to assume that UAC has no role in this for me, as I am using windows XP while UAC was introduced in windows Vista?

all right.

then i'd like to say that i have checked a few sites and some say that UAC is in windows xp, some say that it is absent. i'd check around your programs for UAC or something of that nature, then try poking around with it if it exists.

if it's not there, check if your administrator privelages are on. i'm on an admin account in my vista, but it sometimes doesn't run things such as obmm as administrator.

that's the rest of the things i can think of, but good luck getting your game to work.

UAC is not in winXP. On the other hand, I notice that you are using

Natural_Weather_by_Max_Tael.esp

This version is buggy and should be replaced. There is a non-bugged enhancement version of it

that I recommend you locate and download.

Try running without that mod as a test and see if it makes any difference for you.

Since you are no longer running from the protected folder structure, your next step in diagnosing the Page Fault BSOD (other advices notwithstanding) should be to check your RAM. Remove each stick, blow any dust off, and replace one at a time -- don't forget to power off and earth yourself before doing this. Faulty RAM is probably the second most common cause of this error.
