Cannot update to patch V1.2

So I admit I'm new to TES in general to the computer but have been a long time fan on the xbox. So I was looking at the mods lately (Midus Magic, Deadly Reflex, Natural Enviroments) And they all say I need patch V1.2. So I downloaded the latest and get this message when it tries to install, "Patch Error: Old file not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match" I have uninstalled and reinstalled Oblivion and this still happens. Any help?

I am not familiar with that particular combo version so I don't know if it needs a patch or not.

When you start up the game, on the brown screen where you select 'continue', 'new', 'load' etc. look in the lower left corner there should be a version number. Mine is v1.2.0146 which is the latest version. If you have that version, you do not need to patch and the message is telling you that it found patch with that number already installed.

However, for some obscure reason BOTH the Oblivion only and the Oblivion with Shivering Isles patches have the exact same version number.

If you do not have Shivering Isles DO NOT use the Shivering Isles patch, and if you do have Shivering Isles installed, ONLY use the Shivering Isles patch.

Do not use a torrented patch. The patch is FREE from the official site where every language and version is available. http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/updates_patches.htm

If you have installed the wrong patch you must reinstall the game as a patch cannot be removed.

I have a similar problem with different software and after a full day of hunting forums, websites and FAQs I've had no luck solving it. My problem is exactly the same in that I want to use some mods that need the latest update (mods need latest OBSE which needs latest oblivion patch) I get the same message at 8% saying "Patch Error: Old file not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match" and I have uninstalled the game and removed every non-original file from my Oblivion folder before reinstalling but still the same problem. I put the files left after the uninstall in an archive which I then moved and deleted manually all the files that I archived from the folder itself. So to my knowledge there should only be one instance of this game installed on my computer with no mods or additions and no current patches. Yet it still doesn't work...

The game plays fine as long as I don't try to use the OBSE loader which tells me I have an unknown version of Oblivion and I should patch it up. That's because the OBSE I have needs the updated patch obviously... Currently I've left OBSE off the system and I just have vanilla Oblivion which I am trying to patch in it's virgin form. The game I own is the original Collector's edition which I preordered and have had no problems with since. I'm assuming it must be the uk version but I also tried the US patch on the offchance they messed something up. I don't have Shivering Isles and I've been using the patch direct from the official site which is the Oblivion only UK/EU/Australia one or whatever it is.

Anyway I'm now left with an unmodded, ugly, vanilla game because I can't patch it up to the latest version and if I can't do that then I see no point in modding or playing it until a solution turns up! The update gets to 8% on the lower bar after filling the top bar to 100% twice. I have NEVER had a nocd crack for this game and as I said it was originally preordered so there was no possible way for me to download or crack it before I got it in the post! It's a genuine copy of the game bought legitimately from a big store and I can't think of any other reason for this update to continue failing for me. Any help would be much appreciated as I've never actually played all the way through Oblivion and now there are so many mods around to improve what was originally a fairly lacking game I wan to give it a go!

Forgot to mention my launcher is V1.0.0.1 and Oblivion.exe is V0.1.0.228

Have you tried my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure?

Here is a link

http://www.tesnexus.com/articles/article.php?id=240

It allows you to preserve any saves and mods, or remove them completely - your choice.

I have the collectors edition - US version and have had no problems with patches or OBSE.

Thanks trying that now. I'm up to about 7% defragged so I have some time left I think!!! I'm running XP, does it matter if I change the install directory? I like to keep my games altogether in C:Games (like you suggest for vista and such) but this is the last time I'll reinstall so I don't want to install there if it may not work. Could I move the folder after a default install and successful (touch wood) update? Or will it break the saves and such?
