Deep search for applications, missing files.

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone does anyone know of a good alternative to xp file search for windows 7, thats the one feature i miss a lot when it comes to xp, the ability to search extensively for missing files. i was wondering is there a application that does it like xp does, it would be nice to be able to just type in the key word and it'll find it in the index.

I know windows 7 has a file search but it sucks big ones...

Windows 7's search feature works fine for most ORGANISED people, lol. However if you have a large number of files (and have correctly updated the indexes (Indexing Options aswell as Folder Option's Searches tab in Control Panel)) then you can use the below guide to understand about using advanced parameters in searches for files.

Unfortuently, Windows 7 doesn't have an extended search feature like XP as it's not needed (at least not one that I am aware of), it's just a matter of configuring the quick-search feature to more ideally suit your needs.. There most likely is a program out there somewhere that'll hlep you however.

I am with Thor on this.

I have tried the Win7 search and found it lacking. I can look in the folders and see a file. but when I run the search it cannot find it. If I KNOW a file is there and even tell it where to look and it cannot find it then how do I know it will find a file that I'm not sure is there? Or a file that I don't know the location of? (and if I do already know why am I searching?) And yes, indexing was turned on for those folders and drive at the time and it said indexing was complete.

But those people don't need it!

You could try Cathy (link is autho'rs homepage) or Locate32. Or both. I use both. I use Cathy more though, it's simpler and faster. Locate32 has a more familiar interface (resembles pre-XP search dialog) and more options for searching, but takes significantly longer to index. Cathy indexed my terabyte drive in less than five minutes. Locate32...took a while.
