I am new to modding and all I am attempting right now is a simple retexture, but I can't seem to get that right, I have watched videos on Youtube and have read wikis, but I can't seem to figure it out. Can someone please help me out?

The programs I have downloaded are; Blender, Oblivion BSA Commander, GIMP, NifSkope, DDS Converter 2, and Texture Replacer by JOG

Edit: and I have TES4Construction Set

We'll need a bit more information than that. For instance:

What, exactly, are you trying to retexture? Weapon? Armor/Clothing? Something else?

How did you go about doing it?

What is not working about it? Is it partially invisible? Does equipping retextured Armor/Clothing make the related body part invisible? Is the weapon mounted on your back, but entirely visible from the front?

If we know these details, we'll be better able to help you out.

I'm trying to keep it simple and just retexture a normal monk robe, I'm trying to make it look like a hospitaller robe.

I unpacked the meshes and textures compressed BSAs and was able to open up the monk robe in nifskope, I located the texture and am trying to open it in GIMP to add the new texture, but I can't figure it out.

If you know of an easier way to go about doing this I would really like to hear it :)

Another thing, if you know of better programs that are free (really strapped for money at the moment :/) and will make my life easier, I would greatly appreciate a link or description to one :)

Sounds like you need the .dds plugin for GIMP. This link off the CS wiki isn't working at the moment, but it looks like someone uploaded the plugin to Fallout 3 Nexus. http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2367

GIMP is a good program, but needs a plugin to open .dds file (follow the link provided by SavageArtistry). Another good (and free) program is Paint.net, which can edit .dds files without an additional plugin.

One thing to remember about making a retexture is the NormalMap. NormalMaps tell the game how to properly apply the texture to the mesh. NormalMaps have the same name as the texture they work with, but they have _n on the end. When you make your new texture from the monk robe, if you save it as shirt_alttexture (assuming you're using the brown monk robe), your new texture will still use the same NormalMap as the original texture and you won't have to worry about making the NormalMap yourself.

Thank you both :) I downloaded Paint.net because I still couldn't get GIMP to open the file :/

I retextured the monk robe and now I'm stuck lol. I'm not sure where to save it or how to get it in my game. And I'd like to be able to view the robe put together to see if I placed my added texture in the right spot, how can I do this?
