Graphics Card Help

Recommended Posts

Alrighty.... So if anyone in here read some of my old posts you probably know my old graphics card died. After that happened we reverted to using our integrated video card and just recently I bought a new $110 card, ATI Radeon HD 5550. Its a Visiontek(whatever that is...) and the installation guides give little detail, and it is not specifically just for this card. Here are the instructions (kind of simpler though):

1.Uninstall old drivers -- Finished that and then everything looked really big

2.Disable the onboard video card if you have one -- I did this through the device manager, as in the BIOS there is no setting to turn it off, though I did set PCI-Express as the card slot to use since that is the slot for my new card.

3.Power down, unplug the monitor, remove the cover, remove the old card if possible (which is NOT for me), and plug in the new card -- I did this too.

4.Put everything back, plug the monitor into your card, and power up. -- This is the problem... The monitor gets no signal. Even if its plugged into the integrated card. Just having my new card in does this, once I remove it I can use the integrated spot again. I believe the computer keeps re-enabling the integrated card, I have even uninstalled it though

many people had said do not do that and it reinstalled too!

Then it tells you to install the new drivers...

I know the card works, because the fan turns on, so the computer also knows its there. I just think the integrated card and my new one are conflicting. (Also should I remove the stickers from the new card? Or does it not matter?)

I am attaching the manual for the 5500 series of cards, sorry I had to change it to a text file as the Adobe version was too big. Also if your gonna give me an answer can you put it in simple terms, not like all these fancy abbreviations that I won't know... Trust me, its happened before.

Thanks

What type of motherboard is it? There should be some sort of option to turn the IGP off in the BIOS. I'm not too sure though, my motherboard doesn't have integrated video, so I'm not sure what the option would be called.

Um honestly I'm not to good with what is what in a computer, like name-wise. Would the motherboard be like Intel Pentium 4?

Hmmm... Also I just looked for some reason the computer thinks there are two monitors... Exactly the same except one has a current resolution and the other does not. Dont know if thats important though.

It's possible you have a bad video card - just because it's new doesn't mean it will always be good. Do any of the stickers block the air channels or restrict air flow through the fan? Do any of them cover any of the pins on the connector? If so remove those. If you plan to return the board (if bad) don't remove any stickers that do not affect the operation. Any that do should have a notice saying they should be removed before operation.

Also, look down in the socket on the motherboard and make sure there is nothing down inside that could be preventing a proper connection - dust, dirt or trash such as a piece of tape - or a piece of one of those stickers.

If you see 2 monitors, check to see what they are running from - #1 Integrated, #2 new card - then see if you can change which is primary in the software - the integrated may go blank then. And the new one may work.

None of the stickers say they need to be removed, and the slot for the card is clean. Also both of the monitors that show up are from the same thing (Which I think is the integrated card since they both stay even with only the integrated card in, Also if anyone didn't understand having the new card in the computer causes the monitor to have no signal, even if the monitor isn't plugged into the new card).

This is the SIW info from the VGA controller (the integrated card)
