chronosmagus
It never hurts, but I don't consider it a real necessity either due to the content of the site.
LHammonds
The only thing that might help with is keeping your ID/Password from being exposed when you login (and being intercepted by hackers between you and the Nexus. An HTTPS encrypts data between you and the server so that any data intercepted while going across the wire cannot be easily read. This is usually reserved for just sensitive data transactions such as logging in and credit card transactions. Using HTTPS for the entire session would be unnecessary and cause additional load on the server having to handle encryption on top of the amount of traffic it already processes. So, depending on what your poll is geared towards, yes, it is a good idea for login but not much else. I haven't heard of may accounts being "taken over" by a hacker though...at least not one over the Internet. We had several problems with "little brothers" accessing the site after "big brother" forgets to logout but that is about all that has been reported.
