Oblivion Mod Manager issue

The rule of thumb for copying and pasting FOLDERS is always paste into one level higher than you copied.

So the game's structure is always Oblivion\Data\Meshes and Oblivion\Data\Textures. If you right click/copy a folder named Data from your extracted download the rule is you will paste into a folder named Oblivion (one level higher up).

The rule for loose files like say footfemale.dds is to paste into the folder you want the file to wind up in. So if your extracted download had Data\Textures\characters\imperial\female\footfemale.dds and you were copying just the FILE footfemale.dds you would paste into female folder in your game's Data\Textures\characters\imperial\female folder path.

So the short answer is yes, you would put the Data folders into your Oblivion folder.

thankk you Striker for your help

There are clues to watch for when you are copy/pasting.

With FOLDERS the clue is the Windows warning that "There is already a folder named <whatever the folder you have copied>". If you don't get that warning when copying folders there is a very good chance you've pasted into the wrong folder (the only exception is the rare occasion you are copying a folder that didn't already exist in your target).

With FILES there will be no clue you've done it right. You'll need to use Windows Explorer to examine your game's folders to make sure the file is in the correct folder by comparing to your extracted download.

With loose files if you get an overwrite warning it should clue you to recheck what files are in which folders from mods you already have installed, because your new mod is trying to overwrite another mod's file. The only time the overwrite will possibly overwrite any original game files is for shaders, music or video ... all of the other game files are safe inside their respective compressed archives (the BSA files).

If you have the gold Shady Sam is the man to see. Go through the stable paddock at Chestnut Handy and down the path just past the big rock on your right. You'll see him standing right next to the city wall, but you need to walk past the rock a bit to see back behind and to your right to where he's hiding.

What do you think needs to be improved or is missing from your game?

Hi Striker

Thanks for that bit of information about where to buy lockpicks... am sure i will manage to find/loot them in time, but just now, am very short of them

Not sure what I actaully need to improve or add to the game. Probably just adding interesting and stable mods., I suppose

One mod (although I am sure some will frown upon it), is the NoEncumberance mod...it is saving me a lot of frustration lol

Thanks for your advice and instruction so far and I look forward to more in future

thanks

Another good source of lockpicks are the goblins and their caves. Usually, the vast majority of them carry lockpicks.

Oh, and the Skeleton Key... Once you have reached level 10, look for the Daedric Shrine of Nocturnal and complete his Quest. This, and the other Daedric Quests, will not be available until you're level 10 or up.

Are you satisfied with the ridiculously looking female versions of the vanilla armors? I mean, the cleavage in the Iron Armor for example, the overall skimpyness of them. If you like this:

and find it perfectly fine, then I have nothing more to say. But perhaps you think it's unrealistic and you believe that she should wear this instead:

Female clothing and armors is the most abundant topic here. There are two currents: the skimpy, over-sexualized one, and the realistic, practical one. The followers of the first current like their women fighting half-naked (or downright naked, with just some straps here and there). The followers of the second trend like both men and women wear practical, protective things.

Of course you could take the middle path, there are lots of cool-looking armors that show a reasonable amount of skin for both genders.

Apart from clothing and armor, the most popular mods are the Graphics enhancements, being the top ones Qarl's Texture Pack 3 (its really demanding on the hardware requirements) and the Oblivion Reloaded (the successor of the highly popular OBGE; you will see lots of references to OBGE and lots of recommendations towards it, but believe me, it's obsolete and deprecated, Oblivion Reloaded is its current replacement).

For cinematic effects and ambient lighting, the diverse ENBs are popular too, but again, with Oblivion Reloaded you will have plenty of options to prettify your fx and ambient, so I suggest you to stick to it if you choose OR.

Qarl's Texture Pack has a series of requirements that MUST be fullfilled, inexcusably. Be sure to read the description page before doing anything with it.

Oblivion Reloaded is maintained regularly by his creator, Alenet, and if you need help and advice on it, his Comments thread is very active.

There are lots of mods to improve individual things in the game, like how the water looks, how the rain looks and behave, things like that, but, again Oblivion Reloaded now includes options for all of it, so my recommendation is: do not install any other mod to "improve" the look and feel of things if you have already OR installed and running. Or at least ask first if you need some of these other mods.

Quests and Adventures. Before installing any of the Quest and Adventure mods, you better play the base game and finish the Main Quest, because if you are a low-level character, you will die A LOT with these Quest mods.

My favourite ones are The Lost Spires, Kragenir's Death and The Naked Nord.

Then, there are my own mods, of course.

Do not jump to install all these mods at once, first make sure you want them, ask about them, tell us what you would like to have in your game, so we can point you in the correct direction (or, now that we're comfident enough friends, point at your face and laugh at you. Whatever).

Oopsie, somebody posted something here. Let's pry it.

Cheers!

Addendum: about the encumbrance thing, I don't use these mods. Instead, I use the Bag of Holding mod, it puts a magical bag in your game that can contain an INFINITE amount of items without encumbering you. So you maintain your ecumbrance and, most importantly, the encumbrance of the rest of NPCs, so the Burden spell will remain useful (I have read comments about the no encumbrance mods rendering this spell completely useless).

About my mods, I have specialised myself in Companion Mods and, lately, Playable Races mods. Since Oblivion has no actual Follwers, you need to install them. If you want to have followers, companions, in your adventures, like in other RPGs, there are plenty of them at your disposal. If you want to try some of my Companions, for the love of God DO NOT USE RYAN. Really, do not use Ryan.

Cheers!

Aww Ike, why you bein' so hard on poor Ryan?? Just cuz he's klepto, and Mr Unreliable, and Mr WhereTheF*IsHeNow?? Maybe the poor guy just needs some luvin', like all the rest of us.

Another alternative to consider for the ever present encumbrance issue is Packdonkeys. First thing any of my guys saves up for. Reliable, configurable, summonable ... not related to Ryan in the slightest.

Hi Ike

thanks for your great info as usual

I am not really interested in the 'sexulaised' models in Oblivion...not very realistic to the game or age.. am happy as things are atm ...i think, unless you have a suggestion?

I might be more interested in the environment mods like weather, water enhancements, landscapes textures to enhance the look of that side, but nothing to complicated... my poor brain is struggling as it is lol... do you recommend Oblivion Reloaded then to have thiese options ?

i would not mind a companion... might be interesting...like a dog or something...although, it would probably die a lot with me lol... a link for one would be good that you think would be good.. one that fights my battles for me lol

Tis one look good...does it fight as well? http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/44763/?tab=3&navtag=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusmods.com%2Foblivion%2Fajax%2Fmodimages%2F%3Fuser%3D0%26id%3D44763%26gid%3D101

I would be more interested in the quest and adventure type mods. I will try the 3 that you have listed there

Are they installed like normal mods ive done so far.. sofar iedownload and install?

I have been picking up lock picks form some goblins as i wander around the wilderness looking for places to loot etc... just i find that i use up a lot of picks, trying to open chests and doors lol

Ok..prepare for stupid question lol

What do I click to level my character...i can see the main bar is full, but cant work out what to click lol

thanks again

Hey, xblades!

To level up your character, as soon as the notification and level-up icon appear, you need to go to sleep. Then, the Level Up menu will appear.

So, you like my Finlan and/or Nesure, don't you? Yes, they will fight, and quite bloodthirstly should I say. Having a Companion with you has a curious side effect: all the enemies will target them instead of you at first, and only will go after you if you attack them or come too close to them (the enemies).

All my companions are Essential, it is, immortal. They will get knocked out and unconscious, but will not die. Each of them is slightly different from the others in regards to combat techniques: Finlan and Nesure are standard Warriors, Cethlenn is an Archer, Alroy is Crusader, Dillion is Battlemage and Ryan is a Thief, and I mean a thief, the b****rd.

The Quest Mods I mentioned are a matter of download and install, yes. The Lost Spires comes in .bsa format, that is, the downloaded package only contains two files, the esp and the bsa, no folders. You put both files inside your Data folder. The Naked Nord contains a folder named Sound and the esp. Both go to the Data folder. And Kragenir's Death is a little more complicated than that, let's leave it for the last, when your character is strong enough.

Oblivion Reloaded will not change textures. For enhancing the landscape textures you need either Qarl's Texture Pack or some Landscape-driven retexture, like the less demanding Landscape Retexture by Lougian. But these only retexture the terrain, the vegetation needs separate textures. The better in my opinion is Brittainy's Lush and Gaudy Floriana Gloria.

Bear in mind that if you install Qarl's or any of the other retexture mods, you will not be able to add any other mod that alters landscape without an hell of bashing, patching, merging and hassle. And your computer must be strong enough to handle these Hi-Res textures.

About the "skimpy armors", I really hate the vanilla female armors, with their cleavages and exposed legs and all, so I use always Nuska's Protective Female Armors. She left out of her package some of the armors, but the community made them, have a look. In fact, the armor my Nesure wears is based on Nuska's Protective Ebony Armour. You can bet your socks than you will never find any of my female characters wearing something like this. However, the sexy yet reasonable Eyren's Vampire Hunter Armor is one of my favourites.

Oh, the choices are endless. You will spend hours and hours surfing the Files section of the Oblivion Nexus.

Cheers!
