In order to get back, they have to fulfill some kind of unspecified job by Hermaeas Mora. Unfortunately for them he's a dick, so they're practically stuck. Other characters like Lucifer and others get pulled into their problems since they need Sam and Dean for a sacrifice to prevent the final annihilation of all Creation.
