WrathOfDeadguy
Cases/hulls are used in reloading- when you combine them with the appropriate powder, primer, and some lead at a reloading bench, you get usable ammo. If you break down existing ammo that you don't use, often you can use the components to craft ammo that you will use. Reloading benches can usually be found around shops that sell weapons. BooneoftheWasteland
I use this to max as much as I can with my favourite ammo and right now it is the .357 So each ammo has specific ingredients that can be broken down by other types of ammo. All need empty cases for that particular ammo type and all need lead as well. The others vary, pistol powder, large rifle powder etc. It's been handier then I had originally thought after I figured it out. So you can collect tons of ammo you don't need or use at the moment and possibly convert them to ammo you do use at the moment.
Vagrant0
The ammo loading aspect is really there to let you create ammo with different attributes or being able to take something common, like 9mm ammo, and convert it into something rarer. Ah, I get it. So if I want to turn .9mm ammo to .44mm, I break it down to powder? and then what, sorry for the stupid questions but could you break down the steps?Doing my first playthrough, my character doesn't really use guns as I thought it would be challenging and interest to do a umarmed/explosives expert. Next one I will be using guns though...

Oh, 5mm bullets (minigun) need:5mm case (obtained occasionally when firing a weapon that uses 5mm rounds) x1PrimerSmallRifle x1PowderSmallRifle x5Lead x13 Meanwhile the 5.56mm rounds (carried by nearly every NCR trooper you find) break down to:PrimerSmallRifle x1PowderSmallRifle x3Lead x105.56mm case x1 While this won't give you a 1 to 1 conversion, the conversion it does give is pretty good for a weapon that chews through ammunition. There are a few others which are somewhat useful, especially with the handloader perk, but there is quite a bit of potential in regards to recycling energy weapon ammo and modding.
