Windows xp?

Ive currently got windows ME installed on my computer, but due some way it operates I cannot put 1024 MB ram or more in any combonation of DDR 3200 or 2700 without having problems. I know its not my motherboard because I tried switching to another and I have the same problem. I went down to comp USA and was told that it has something to do with windows ME, and that I should switch to xp. Im kind of hesitant to do this though, as one of my friends has it and doesnt like it, and I've heard that you cant play older computer games on it as it doesnt use DOS.

Could anyone here please give me their opinions of windows xp if you have it? thanks in advance.

Well, there's not a whole lot of difference as far as I can see, besides the fact that all my programs work (no idea if they would with another version). Of course I'm using the classic skin, and have disabled a few of the useless and cpu/ram stealing features.

And as for older games... I believe THIS is what you need.

Bah, get Windows 2000! ME and XP are both dumbed-down, almost nonfunctional versions of Windowsn 98 and Windows 2000, respectively. And if you want to play a DOS game on Windows 2000, there isn't much stopping you. If the game doesn't work under the NT command interpreter, you can still produce a DOS-only boot disk, something that I believe is restricted in Windows XP.

You said you disabled some useless features - which are they :D I really need to make mine run smoother..

thanks,

Then again, DOS doesn't recognize the NTFS file system, right?

I still love 98SE... It doesn't seem to have a problem with 1024MB RAM, but it doesn't fully use it either though. If I really have to give it up I will make a dualboot with my secondary HD for 2kpro.

Well, broken cpu fan is keeping me off my own computer so I can't tell you exactly what I did. But I just followed a guide I found online somewhere. I'd suggest looking around in the control panel and disable stuff like transparent menus, etc.

Why don't you just split your harddrive and install one windows on one half, and another windows on the other half?

Dual boots are nice to have around, but in all honesty there's no reason to be running two versions of windows just for the use of some older games. Also, Windows XP has a problem recongizing different versions of windows in other partitions. The only real reason to dual boot is if you have a seperate hard drive running another version of windows or Linux. Other than that, I would just pick my favorite version of windows and run that. Or if you have an extra computer or two, run older games on those.

Good point with that last part. You could probably get an old computer that would run your games for cheap, if not free. I was looking at this thinking about dedicated servers/network rendering, and total parts cost for a 200mhz one is around $30-50 if you don't need the case, monitor, etc. So if you're willing to use a cardboard case and switch the monitor cables around, it wouldn't be much of an investment, no more than the price of a new game.
