Zmid
Well, I run Win XP and have found absolutely no probs at all with it. As for running DOS games, as Peregrine suggested, you could use DOSBox (follow his link), and as for DOS not recognising NTFS, there is a way of formatting your drive using FAT32 with Win XP through the Recovery Console, though the downside is the only way of getting to the Recovery Console (that I know of, anyway) is to install Win XP using NTFS then rebooting from the install CD, and this will mean you will have to completely reformat your hard drive with FAT32. Saying that, though, when I upgraded from Win 98, I got the option of using the FAT32 system, but I'm not sure about Win ME.
Superunknown
Thanks for all the advice, just one other question: I looked through the screenshots of the games supported on the current CVS, and I noticed they were all pretty old games. How old does a game have to be in order for it not to work on windows xp? The oldest game I play on my computer is half life, so if that would work on xp I would be fine. Also does anyone here who has xp have 1024+ RAM? I'd like to be sure it works on xp before getting it.
Peregrine
Yes, halflife works fine with xp. Most of the ones that have problems are old dos games and stuff.

Yep, Half-life works fine and dandy, and is still great, especially with all the mods out there for it, and I have 1024Mb DDR 266 and it works fine. HeLLL
Could this and this be what you are looking for? Ive hacked my windows box to shreds <yes I still need windoze to play some games in>. remeber regedit is your FRIEND. Don't be scared about screwing something up. Generally you dont have to do ANYTHING and Windows will screw up. <The above links are to edit Windows XP services. Have that pooe you DON'T need. Word of caution though. If you no jack about your box BACK AWAY NOW. Otherwise you COULD be stuck in trouble shooting HeLLL with no idea where to start. Also in the second link which has the service tweaks/hacks in it; Ideally DON'T use gamer if you use XP to log onto the web as it disables your Modem/Other Dial Up Networking pooe <if you just follow the recommended "way">. With the hole RAM thing. Whats your mobo? Some mobos can't handle more than 512 Mb or 1 Gb of ram <or 16 Kb if you are really pushing it :P>. PArtitoning your drive wouldnt be a dumb idea either. some advice. Install Windows 98/SE FIRST THEN Windows XP or 2000. XP and 200 will pick up that there is a nother version of Windows and will automatically add it to the MBR so you can boot it. <If you install XP then 98 you can always download a freeware Boot Loader. Try tucows.com they usually have some good stuf there.> Since we are talking about which file system to use why not try Resifer FS ??? B) <little nix joke there>. NTFS IMHO is a waste of time. Sure it may be *cough* more secure *cough* <if you want secure have 4 or more HDD and set up a nice RAID array and set one of the HDD or partions as a 128bit Secure partion. Store all the pRon and crud in there and Fat16 chance of anyone cracking into that little baby :P> than Fat32 but Fat32 is a nice and easy file system to have. An contry to popular believe defragging your hardrive WON'T give you those performance boosts you need <or think you will get> :P

I have an ASUS A7V8X and in the manual for it under memory:3 x DDR DIMM SocketsMaximum 3 GB unbuffered PC2100/1600 non-ECC SDRAM memory. (Note: PC2700 maximum to 2 DIMM support only. PC3200 maximum to 1 DIMM only) and I couldnt gett 2 pc2700 DIMMs to work.
HeLLL
Mmmm well Id say you are really pushing your board. Whats your PSU at? Also EVEN thought it says that you can handle 2 sticks of PC2700 it doesnt mean it will WORK. Correct me if Im wrong but if you did some cool FSB overclock wouldn't that give the RAM a bit more room to breath? Or would it create more problems by putting FAR to much stress on the board??? Im not sure.
Superunknown
whats PSU? sorry I dont know a whole lot about computers, I'm just pretty experience at fixing them. Anyway I got xp tonight and tried it and so far it works fine. Right away I was able to get 2 2700 RAM DIMMs to work with no problem, and its telling me now that I've got 1024 mb RAM, so I'm pretty much convinced it was Windows ME. HeLLL
Good stuf mate. PSU is Power Supply Unit. That thing you put the plug from the wall socket into your computa. Yea it could of being ME but Windows being windows it could be pooe loads of things. I used to have a nasty problem in XP when I would get reapead STOP errors and random reastarts etc. After 2 months of trouble shooting it turned out to be my luult 6 Gb hot swap drive. Took that out and can now play Morrowind for 7 hours with NO CTDS <unlike 15 minutes and it would crap itslef>. If it happens agin check the postions of you PCI cards <as in what order they are in>. I kid you not if I put my NIC in the last PCI slot then my modem above it then sound card XP will lock after 5 minutes even with a fresh install. Change the NIC and modem and hey preston no more problems :P Also what brand of RAM are you using? Gemnerally it is a good idea to keep to the EXACT SAME brand of RAM and size otherwise it leads to the possibilty of problems <I would explain but not tonight  > Example: My old 200 would spit the dummy if I had a 128Mb stick of SDRAM in with a $*Mb stick. Aboulty pack itself. Remove either one and the box went fine. Wierd aye <also that was using Windows so that sums it all up>.

Yea I eventually got all the same type of RAM (PNY) because I was wondering if that was one of the things causeing my system to crash
