Arms and armors from NV to FO3, rules???

Hey every1

Been reading about 25% of the forum now, but can't seem to find an answer for this question

Is it legal to use arms and armors from New Vegas in public FO3 mods?

If it is not allowed to upload the resources themselves to a public forum, is it then allowed to upload .ESP / .ESM files that will add the items to FO3 by using the paths to the NV folders?

In that way you can make sure people still need the NV game to use the resources

The problem with the two games is that they are so compatible that even before I decided to install the game, I was still able to download some of the NV armors from mods found on the Nexus NV site and add them to FO3 without any alterations needed, this might be a bit too tempting to do for some people, but what are the rules for this?

P.S.

In case it is not permitted to do the above, please don't PM me for assistance in helping others do it, as I will not

With Best Regards

this is a really good question

as far as i know, there shouldn't be a problem, if you are only releasing the plug-in file

as long as you don't upload any copyrighted materials, then there should be no problem

but, isn't there a little problem with uploading such a plug-in??

i mean, will it work, if the file path is different then yours??

I'd say probably not: It would allow people who have not bought the New Vegas game, to use it's content. The same happened before with Morrowind and Oblivion and that ended up in a no-go as well.

Edit: Oh my bad, I read it wrong. If you could make the ESP refer to another path and not include any of the actual material, it might just be okay :P

Well in case the paths that people use are too different, you could just make it easy by creating an empty custom folder to go with the .ESP, the folder could then be placed in the FO3 Data directory and people could add the resources from their own NV to it themselves

But again, I hope I can get a reply from a Nexus Moderator, so I can be absolutely sure whether or not this will be okay, so I hope they'll read this post

If I don't hear anything, I'll have to make a direct PM, though they seem to be rather busy most of the time, but it would be a nice question to get an answer for

Look at the Eula, look at the law of your country(is the licence Legal here), look at the Rule forum.

If Eula Allow it, you can.

If It disallow it, you can't, unless the licence is Illegal in your country.

If The Nexus Rules Disallow it, you can't Upload it here anyway.

Yea but honestly I'd still prefer an answer from a moderator, as I assume they are the ones most up to date on this and that way be sure not to misinterpret or misread any of the legal stuff

And also I wouldn't choose any other website to upload to then Nexus, so their approval / disapproval is all that matters to me

What I'd do is to actually do the mod and see if you get a Cease and Desist. Because frankly, technically, it's all pretty dodgy. It all really comes down to "Would Bethesda and/or Obsidian care?".

We need to either get an official Bethesda or Obsidian (which will likely be a big 'No'-letter, due to legal reasons), or test the waters and see if they'll happily ignore it.

Yeah, just don't upload anything here. They eat people for doing that.

The problem being, of course, that if it is uploaded anywhere else, no-one will notice, least of all Bethesda/Obsidian. :P

I'd think that The Nexus would be the first to have some proper clarity on the subject. What is modding, if not pushing the limits? :whistling:

Ewrrurh...pushing the limits also a bad idea. Anyway...

I know a modder (and a good one) who pathed a NV esp to the vanilla FO3 files to add content. CTD when the game loaded. He tried pathing a FO3 esp to NV files and it worked and then CTD. This tells me an esp/esm only patch from game to game won't work, or at least it didn't for him and he's GOOD.
