RideTheCatfish
I've made several 'interiors' mods that simply fill in some of the buildings that dot the wasteland. I am very careful not to delete any pre-existing objects from the worldspace when I make these mods, because I know that can bring about complications. However, some people have been reporting frequent and inconsistent CTDs when they have my mods checked. Not everyone is experiencing these problems, but the people who are seem to be experiencing them at different areas and at different times. At first I thought it was a conflict with some other mod, but people tell me they've run the game with only my mods checked and have still gotten the CTDs. Naturally, I'm having a hell of a time pinpointing the root of the problem. And so I ask the Nexus - what could be the issue?
gsmanners
I think the problem is Gamebryo. You look in the official forums, you'll see this same complaint about the vanilla game itself from time to time.
RideTheCatfish
Yeah, I'm familiar enough with Gamebryo's woes, but it just seems like my mods are making the pre-existing problems worse. Can this be blamed on the engine as well? Is it just that unstable?
gsmanners
Some mods in Fallout 3 would bloat the size of the game saves, and it was noticed that once you get over 5 MB, the crashes get a bit more frequent. Once you get over 10 MB, it's almost a certainty that you'll crash every 10 to 30 minutes.
RideTheCatfish
So is there nothing I can do, then? The mods I'm making are very simple, using almost nothing but pre-existing elements of the game. Is it that easy to bloat it?
gsmanners
You're adding interiors, right? Interiors are just new cells that add to the amount of data the game has to track.
RideTheCatfish
Well why do they even provide something like GECK if the game can't handle even small additions of data? Dammit folks, you had two years to make a more stable game. Ugghggffffff.
gsmanners
You just have to be selective, that's all. I mean, each new cell adds about 20 or 30 KB, I figure. So if you limit yourself to about 100 of those, you only add about 2 or 3 MB.
RideTheCatfish
Each of my mods has about seven or eight additional cells, though.
