Altering item stats in mods

I have been looking all over and none of my searches can tell me how to alter the stats and add enchantments to armors and weapons in mods.

What I would like to do is to, for instance, alter the stats on an armor set like Skeleton K's armors in order to make them validly usable to play the game past the first few levels.

The best looking armor mods seem to all be only set for a few points of armor and nothing else. I downloaded and tried to use the TES construction tool, setting the mod to active, going in and altering the stats and even going so far as to create some minor custom enchantments to make them comparable to some of the other items in the game at my characters current level. I save the changes, and then nothing has changed when I load up the game.

I think I must be missing something very basic. I found a tutorial that explained how to create your own items from a basic vanilla texture in the game, but I don't want to just create god mode versions of existing textures, I would love to be able to play with the beautiful armors that have been created and uploaded here, but seem to be meant for looks rather than practical application.

I guess what it comes down to, is does anyone know of a tutorial that will explain how to edit existing mod items, or can explain it here?

I would greatly appreciate some help, as everything I have been able to find so far, seems to be focused on how to create your own mod, but doesn't seem to explain the basics of altering items within one.

Did you activate the esp in the launcher, if not then do so.

If you have activated the esp then you'll need to elaborate on the process which you used to create the mod.

The reason most good looking armour mods don't provide much defense is because most people with high level characters don't want/need

huge armour ratings since it makes it more challenging, If you want better defense then you open the GECK and activate the main esm and the

mod you want to change and then set the active file to the mod you're changing. Go to the item and duble click to acess stats then mess with them

afterwards all you have to do is save and activate the esp in the launcher

Yeah make sure whatever mod you are modifying in the editor is set as the active file. Example, you want to modify armor in "Armormod.esp", make sure "Armormod.esp" is set as the active file, so all changes will be saved.
