daisy8
Agree totally. Why should I need to be a member of steam to play any game ? I have already paid my money for the software, so now leave me alone ! I don't want anybody else knowing how when and for how long I play a particular game. Now we can't even play a game without some idiot is trying to sell us something or watch us.
KDStudios
You don't have to make a profile on steam, you can just have your account and no one can really bother with you unless you make a profile. At least I didn't have to. Anyway Steam is required to install AND play New Vegas(Yes its stupid and unfair but we all have to put up with it) Steam also automatically updates your game so you don't have to mess around looking for the right patch(Can be good, also has its downsides) Given the choice between Steam and G4WL I'd choose steam.... And I hate steam... =P So long as you play your game fine on it, don't take any thought to it mate =] Happy gaming.
knives_lordX
i would have to agree with with KDStudios on this one too, as i hate steam, but i hate G4WL even more X
chronosmagus
This is the 100th topic mentioning Steam being a requirement. Sure it has it's downsides, but just as much it has its positive aspects (such as the automatic updates). Personally I haven't had any problems with it, but to be sure I've installed all mods as FOMM packages so they can easily be reinstalled if needed. BigBodZod
Not trying to get into Steam Hate or Love it response but since the game requires it to do the automatic updates then you will have to install the Steam client and create an account. I personally love Steam but it's a matter of choice when I decided to go the Digital Download route for many of my games. Love it or Hate it, I believe the future of gaming is going to be *all* digital downloads for both PC/MAC Gaming and Console Gaming.
luthienanarion
The short answer: Yes, you must use Steam to play NV. The long answer: No, you do not need Steam if you replace the executables with cracked versions that we will not supply to you or direct you to, because we're all good boys and girls here. You should bite the bullet and run Steam.
digitfn
The Man's right, when you shell out $40-$50 for a game, it your damn property. They only own the Copyright. When and if Steam releases free games, then they can tell you how and when to use it. Also, a lot of steam released games are not always compatible with the DVD releases, and as far as getting updates, nonsteam games seem to be doing well with that issue. I'm guessing that if your lazy and need everything spoon fed to you, then there you go.... Then there is the privacy issue, Steam collects your info and God only knows how they use, but I'm fairly certain money is somehow involved regardless what their claims are.By the way I generally don't believe in conspiracies, I just remember other companies doing that same thing. I believe I've just used my monthly writing quota......... Thanx Edited November 21, 2010 by digitfn
corvus667
Another point of view: Several times, every few years I played FO1 and FO2 since they were released 1997 and 1998. What if I'd like to play NV in 10 years from now? I'll probably still have my DVD, but will Steam still be there?
FluidFire
Another point of view: Several times, every few years I played FO1 and FO2 since they were released 1997 and 1998. What if I'd like to play NV in 10 years from now? I'll probably still have my DVD, but will Steam still be there? It's just like Taco Bell in Demolition Man. Eventually there won't be anything except Steam. But, like in the movie.. not necessarily a good thing. Personally I *hate* steam. I live in the country, and have a craptastic Internet connection (Hughes satellite). This means when a patch comes out, I am done playing / modding until I have to drag my laptop to work with me the next day to update the game. If the update comes out Friday night, I'm screwed until Monday. This doesn't really go over that well sometimes, but I haven't got fired for leeching on company time/bandwidth ... yet. Then, when I get back home, I have to dump the directory on to my workstation (which takes a REALLY long flippin time since the data directory is 6+ gigabytes). Personally, steam is a pain in the #%##%, and I hate it, but whatever. Gotta live with it, or not play.
