geck and textures

I started a little project on the crafting list, I don't know yet how big it'll get but a complete crafting system is intended. I'm still rather new to modding so maybe i'just over looking something here. Instead of folders for textures and what nots we just have the bsa's. So my question is about making something new but using existing textures/meshes. Those fields in the geck are grayed out so do I have to extract the bsa to apply the texture/mesh or will NV apply it automatically from the bsa? I'm not changing any of the textures/meshes at this point i'm simply reusing what the game already has. I thought since other items had these fields filled in that I had to fill them in on the new item aswell.
