majikmonkee
Is there such a thing as a mod that gives companions (or just NPC's in general) a little more range as far as the things that they do when you're not interacting with them? Companions are great, but nothing makes me nuts like coming home from a long series of adventures, sitting in a comfortable chair, then having my companion stand there and stare at a wall. I haven't messed around with a lot of mods that edit NPC behavior because normally it hasn't bothered me, but the more time I spend with companions, the more noticeable it becomes. And I realize this might be an unrealistic request because all companions seem to have different idle behaviors. Ariana Trudeax reads, practices alchemy, eats, and occasionally goes to bed. Kat (from Heart of the Dead) practices with her weapon, drinks (constantly), and eats occasionally, but has a wider range of commands you can give for different actions. I don't want to mess up the capabilities they already have, but I'm curious if anyone knows of any tested and safe NPC behavior mods that might give them a little more autonomy without breaking the game. rdamstrom
I have a companion engine that is quite capable. I haven't done much to it lately because I got a little burnt out on it and didn't really get much feedback from the community. it does use the obse but in a much more efficient way so it does't put a heavy load on the system. I really need to get back to work on it so if you have some good Idea's I'm listening.
majikmonkee
Hmmm. Well, I'm intrigued. The last modding I did was Duke Nuke'em 3D so im not sure if I'll be very useful in the idea department but i'd like to try. Knowing what to suggest may be the tricky part. I did see one of the companions sit and eat for the first time today but I would like them to simply do what I do if they are following me like sitting at a take with me when I sit or have a bit more frequent random behaviors like trading etc. anything other than standing around looking bored. Kat won't even converse with other NPCs due to having a custom voice so she really looks horribly bored even in a crowded pub. Mortrix927
Talkie Toaster's companion mod actually has a range of idles for your companion, but you have to put appropriate items in there inventory. If they have food, they'll eat, etc. Oh, plus you have to tell them to "make yourself at home."
majikmonkee
I did try to give food to them all and one even has a command telling her to eat, but she always pulls out a mug and starts drinking instead. What a lush...i really would still like a mod that makes them sit by you when you sit down and stuff like that. Mortrix927
Oh. If they have booze in there inventory, they might drink instead. If they have a book, sometimes they'll read. All that being said, I see your point. Actually, it would be nice to have your companion relax when you do, drink when you do, etc. I mean without being specifically told to. rdamstrom
well that's not much to go on, sitting when you sit is hardly inspiring. in my latest work I have them set up on a virtual schedule when released in a properly setup house the will move to different areas of the house the outside locations can be anywhere. a tavern for instance. while all npc's can do this they are in a fixed location so you can't move them to a different house. they can not change they wardrobe. this is all mostly script driven not package driven. anyway their controlling script can be changed at any time. this is exactly what happens when they switch to following. once they are following they will heal you or themself's if they are able. trickle charge their weapons ride horses when you ride. if you stand around to long they will complain a bit (no voice for this) but it is still much more then you will get from a cm companion.they can gather stuff for you in a very efficient way. even demand payment for the work they have done. not all of this is present in my latest release because it isn't easy to get a release ready and trying to upload these files has been a challenge in the past. my engine is flexible enough to allow the companions to be different. have there own personality if we care to go that deep. and so this is really where I'm at now is trying to develop companions that have a background a purpose and a good solid personality something that keeps you coming back for more. what I want in a companion is someone that is brave on the battle field but not so cold that she doesn't have a softer side. sometimes she might be a little bit of a tease if she gets bored but never a little (@@@). of course this might no appeal to everyone but my engine can support just about any companion you care to build. so lets talk about what we really want them to be like and see if we can be inspired to create something really good. majikmonkee
I'm going to sleep on this and give my two cents tomorrow. I played a few hours with my companions with me to really observe what seemed lacking. Hopefully I'll have some useful feedback tomorrow...
