Oblivion Mods Problem

Step1: download nifskope, so ur mesh. files will be automaticly put in the right folder that already happens with texture files

Step2: download winrar, most important feature of installing mods

Step3a: unpack the full mod-folder in to the "data" folder in betesda softworks OR in the oblivion folder

Step3b: if that dont work put them manually in the right folders, .esp in data, .mesh in meshes etc.

Step4: launch oblivion and DONT PRESS play, first click on the "files" bar, then double click on the .esp u want to activate

thats all!!!

I'm going to suggest a different approach than the previous poster since manual installation of mods is sloppy and tedious to remove. It's also very easy to make mistakes. I suggest the following.

1. Download 7zip and install.

2. Download Oblivion Mod Manager for starters. Later you'll want to use Wrye Bash but in the beginning OBMM will do just fine.

3. Store your mods in a folder of your choice, such as Oblivion Mods. Use this as a temp location to unpack and examine the contents of the archives, and to keep as a backup of the archive.

4. Install them using OMODs or BAIN. You can create an OMOD from basically any archive. LHammonds OBMM How-to will help you with the basics.

5. Use OBMM or Wrye Bash to activate your newly installed mod.

6. Download, install, and run Better Oblivion Sorting Software (BOSS) to sort your Load Order for you.

7. Play!

That is a much more efficient and organized approach plus you'll need to learn the utilities listed above in order to continue modding Oblivion successfully. I also suggest you use the information at TESIV:POSItive to your benefit. Lots of good stuff there. There is plenty of great information out there, don't be afraid to search for it. Good luck!

I've installed probably about twenty different mods of varying sizes without using any launcher other than the default Oblivion launcher and run into no conflicts thus far. Is there a performance advantage to using sorting or load utilities mentioned above? This isn't meant to be a post hijack but I think it's a valid related question.

I downloaded nifskope, do i need to put that in any specific folder? I reinstalled oblivion and now have a textures folder in the data files, but i am still missing a meshes folder. How will nifskope automaticly put the meshes in the right folder if there is no meshes folder?

I have winrare instead of 7zip, same kind of software? I have OMOD. I think instaling the mods through OMOD is a little out of my skill range (I dont have a clue what that is.) I downloaded BOSS and moved the .exe and .bat files to my oblivion data files but am lost as far as what to do with them.

I am not going to be using very many mods and the ones i am going to use will be simple (clothing, armor) Is there a way i can just make a new meshes file for programfiles(86)/bethesda/oblivion/data folder? When i move a mod over the meshes for the mod just float around in the data files and the visuals dont show in my game.

Thanks for the help btw guys. -Technologically Impaired Duck

Winrar and 7zip do the same thing, yes. I only suggested 7zip since it's 100% free. Installing with Oblivion Mod Manager and OMODs is about as easy as it gets. I linked you to a step-by-step guide in the post you quoted. This ensures the mods are installed correctly and all files are in the necessary folders. BOSS sorts your Load Order for you. It's real simple to use. It's all in the ReadMe of how to use it.

You can create the folders manually if you know the exact file path, but there is no need for this if you properly install them with OBMM. I don't ever recommend manual installation for reasons mentioned in my previous post which you quoted.

I notice you installed Oblivion to the default directory of Program Files. This could very well be your problem since UAC will interfere and "block" files from functioning properly. If you're on Windows 7, or even Vista, you should install Oblivion to another location, such as C:\Games\Oblivion, to avoid UAC problems.

Use your resources. Read the documentation included in the files you download. I also linked you to TESIV:POSItive earlier which has tons of great information.
