Universal Weapons System

I was thinking of how the military approaches new weapons. The base is a chamber, but modules could be attached to make a pistol, SMG, low-end sniper rifle... changed using the weapon upgrade system for anythign in the field, all the versions use the same type of ammo. A kind of universal tool - a weapon not as necessarily good as a generic (non-unique) weapon, but more versatile than carrying lots of guns.
