A more independent companion.

It's always seemed weird to me how obedient companions are. They follow you everywhere, fight until their knocked down for you, and apart from a few exceptions(boone hating legion, cass hating evil karma etc.) don't really need anything in return. Even when doing their quests, going to a specific location with them, you can take infinitely long getting there and they don't complain.

 

My idea is essentially a companion more like you. Exploring the wasteland, doing what they want, they could even choose to leave you behind for a while, deciding to avoid enemies if they don't feel like fighting or attack people when they feel aggressive.

 

You could have quests or more subtle ways to become better friends with them and from that have more influence on them. You could even take them for a drink or go hunting with them.

 

It's like feeling they're your companion rather than just your follower, which for me, is something most companion's lack.

 

Would be interested to hear other way's to make a companion seem more like a companion.

Example: Telling them to adjust their tactics could result them in telling you they're not gonna do that(in their own, most likely colourful, way) or just ignoring you and doing what they wanted to do anyway.

Niner does that at times. I mean he can be obedient, but he's pretty sassy about it. and every once in a while, he runs off and does his own thing, and ridicules you if you dont join in on his juvenile fun.

playing pranks, doing drugs, and getting himself in to trouble and just bringing you along for the ride. I expect even more of this from future updates of the mod. the author really is doing remarkable things with him.

 

Keep your eye out for his updates, and there may be things you're looking for :)

 

Willow is another masterful work of art for companion mods. she is pretty strong willed. she tells you when she's uncomfortable with situations and when she thinks you should leave an area. She refuses to use any weapon but her custom guns until you train her in her other combat skills. and she makes you work for her loyalty.

 

I'm sure since these guys are the kingpins of companion mods, you may have simply tried past versions that weren't quite as detailed. but if independent companions are what you're looking for, theres a reason these guys are number 1 and 2. they're fantastic pieces of work.
