majikmonkee
Don't throw stuff at me, but I'm a pretty loyal fan of the Vanilla Oblivion combat system. It never really bothered me much that you can't physically see gore and mayhem while destroying your foes. However, after several years of engaging in Vanilla combat, the temptation to spice it up a little bit is creeping in. I've seen a few different options out there like Deadly Reflex, but I know there are others and I don't want to just download the first one I see. Here's what I'm looking for in an enhancer: - improves realism without being over the top: in other words, I don't want every NPC ninja flipping over me or cutting me to ribbons while I stand there like a dope. I'm supposed to be the hero, remember... - can be turned off without issue from the load menu: this is important, because I have impressionable nephews who occasionally play the game from my PC. the normal combat system is fine, but I'd prefer not to have spurting gore and dismemberment for them to go home and tell their mom's about. It's bad enough that I somehow changed things to where all the females now where white thongs instead of the default underwear. - if possible, does not require OBSE: this is a minor request, but for reasons nobody can quite pinpoint, OBSE seems to decrease my FPS enough to make gameplay annoying. Granted, my PC is a few years old, but I try to steer clear whenever possible from downloads that demand the use of OBSE. One other minor issue...I'm in the habit of getting into fights with guards occasionally but rather than killing them, I wear them down to near death, then lure them to where there are mudcrabs or other creatures to deal the final blow so I can avoid the murder rap. If a combat enhancing mod is going to introduce instant kill techniques, I'd like to know about it so I don't accidentally lop someone's head off when I'm just trying to wear them down... roboman43
That is a lot your asking for, so far in all the years i've spent looking for sweet ass mods for my oblivion, i've never seen something that is somewhat close to what your looking for : / Most mods (especially combat mods and gameplay changers) require OBSE. IF you were to ask me, i would say go with deadly reflex, yeah sure u can decapitate, impale, crush skulls, and burn people's flesh right off, but it is the closest "real" combat mod you'll get. The only other one i would suggest is unnecessary violence (and you can actually use both of them) but that involves all those ninja flips and a whole bunch of crazy stuff, way too confusing for me xD. So yeah, deadly reflex is your best bet, unless you could get someone to alter it or make a new mod to your specifications
majikmonkee
I'll try to adapt to one of the existing mods to simplify things. Can deadly reflex be turned off without issue if needed? So I can resume play without it if I choose?
roboman43
of course :) edit: something else about DR, if your gunna get DR6 there is a list of mods you have to get or it wont work well, none of them are super game changing though, you'll see Edited November 26, 2010 by roboman43
majikmonkee
Yeah quite a big list. Looks pretty complicated, I may just stick with vanilla combat.
Smooth613
For now you should stick with Deadly Reflex 5. DR 5 is completely stable, or has been in all of my setups. Don't get me wrong though, Deadly Reflex 6 is amazing but it's in Beta right now and unless you know how to deal with these bugs and use external debugging and editing software then I suggest you steer clear of DR 6 until next release. I'm not knocking DR 6 in anyway, but remember it's a Beta. I currently use it, with little problems, and have helped solve one of the major bugs just recently. I enjoy testing though, but it's not for everybody. Just be patient, a Release Candidate will eventually be out with the bug fixes that are being worked on. Next I would suggest using Duke Patricks SCA Combat mods. They are awesome in their own right. A different flavor from Deadly Reflex but still excellent mods. I use a handful of Duke's mods, Combat Archery is a must have, and love them. You're not going to get the extra blood and gore, slice bodies in half combat, but it's an alternative to vanilla, and DR. You can find these mods here on TESNexus or some of Duke's mods are only on TESA. Another great Oblivion site.
majikmonkee
DR just has too many mod requirements for mods I don't otherwise need, it was a big turnoff. Thanks for all the suggestions though.

Too many mod requirements? Deadly Reflex 5 only requires OBSE, nothing more. However you say you have issues with OBSE. This will likely prevent you from using Duke's mods also, since all of them are heavily scripted and typically require OBSE to function. I replied in another thread as to why you may have OBSE troubles. In case you miss it though I'll mention it here also. You mention you have a Direct2Drive copy of Shivering Isles and OBSE does not work with D2D versions of Oblivion. However the STEAM version is 100% compatible. majikmonkee
Hmmm...the Deadly Reflex version I found on the Nexus page said it required a mod manager, a download to show the player legs, and like three or four other mods that didn't come packaged with it. It looked like a lot more than I wanted to download but maybe I'll check it out.
roboman43
thats only the DR6 download, DR5 only need OBSE i currently use UA and DR6 hand in hand, they are amazing together, but i removed my U cause im waiting for UA2
