Ironman5000
I am trying to re-create my Rusty the Bear mod from New Vegas to Fallout 3 but i've run into a wall: My FNV version was created using the Advanced Companion creation guide with Companion Wheel by Caprius, so I revisited the guide to compile everything for the FO3 GECK but missing out the companion wheel related content. I'm most of the way through now but after adding the list of topics it's come to adding the text for dialogue options, but when I right click the window, the program stops responding and forces me to shut down via the task manager  Any ideas what I can do? I would rather not have to reinstall the game if possible.
blove
Make sure that you have a microphone plugged in.
Ironman5000
Well I dont own a mic and the box I get the crash is the text for the player dialogue options not the response text, which doesn't use sound files.

Ironman5000
OK well I found a mic and indeed it has resolved the crashing issue, cheers blove :) New problem: I have everything set up correctly to the best of my knowledge but when I try talk to Rusty in-game I get a CTD, can anyone help me out maybe common causes for this? It's likely just an oversight on my end.
rickerhk
Most likely is a corrupt sound file or file in not the correct format. Should be an ogg file, mono, 44100Hz, and 16 bit. Edit - just looked at your sound files. They are in stereo. They need to be mono. When in doubt look at the vanilla BSA files - all mono, 16 bit ogg files Also, when making the BSA, turn compression off.
ZephyrWarrior
You also need mono 44100Hz 16 bit files to use the lip sync feature of the G.E.C.K. but they have to be wav files for that. After creating the lip files, you can use ogg files with the lip files with no problems. Also: You can plug any 3.5mm plug into the microphone jack, could be headphones, a m/m cable, anything should work, but I know headphones work. RoyBatterian
Also the ogg files for NV should be downsampled to 24khz (weird!) or they will cause the horrible sound engine to lag and voice modulated (power armor, intercoms) output to be distorted badly. All credits to sesom for this tidbit of information. The vanilla files do seem to be VBR and not CBR with an average of 96kbps.
Ironman5000
I'm just gonna assume that the non presence of sound files is the ctd cause then - I have copied the .ogg files from FNV to FO3 data folder but can't add them in the "New Response" dialogue window, there is the "Sound File" button but doesn't seem to find .ogg files...so do I need to convert to .wav then? I have Audacity which i'm assuming should do the job, and i'm not bothered about lip syncing as Rusty's aesthetic doesn't use facial features. There's no way i'm recording again, it has to be Mishaxhi's voice files or none...certainly not my moronic baritone voice :P The .ogg files I have work just fine in FNV so I would assume they would in FO3 right? If not how can I convert from stereo to mono?
rickerhk
Missing sound files and missing lip files will not cause a CTD. Stereo files might crash FO3. Use audacity to convert them to mono. If you have existing sound files, you don't (can't) add them to the response text. If the formIDs in your plugin did not change when you moved from FNV to FO3, then the sound files should work - if they are the right format. If the formids in the plugin have changed, then you just need to rename your sound files to whatever is shown in the response window for the file name.
