roboman43
I absolutely love modding my oblivion, i might have 100+ mods that i keep active at all times :P i just want to know a few things: 1. Are there any good mods that no one really knows about? if so post them here! 2. I'm looking for a specific realism mod, one that allows you to actually equip food and drink, and when you "attack" with them you eat/drink it, each food/drink has a certain # of charges (skooma and apple would have 1 while tamika 399 vintage and watermelon would have like 3-5 or w/e) if you know of a mod like this, or if you could make one, post it :) (it doesnt seem too hard, they are basically like staves with different animations) 3.im also looking for a good companion mod, maybe even a cool house full of scripted stuff and some nice armor and weapons, new meshes of course ;) please post what you can scrounge up :) it would be well appreciated
majikmonkee
The mod I don't hear much about but recommend is called Druid Mod. It gives you cool nature based spells and powers as you level normally assuming your magic levels are high enough (plus an on demand werewolf transformation is one possible final reward). If you want a companion/unique but cool home, I suggest playing through Heart of the Dead. You wind up with one of three potential companions plus a rather unique home I rather like. Not to mention the story itself is epic. Not sure about the realism mod I'm afraid... Edited November 27, 2010 by majikmonkee

majikmonkee
hahah...yeah, I went through a phase where all my games I used to play were all in "god mode"...glad that passed. And Druid Mod can be a little frustrating if you start it late in life. It gave me a bunch of powers all at once because I was level 33 when I first added it, but it took forever to hit level 35 so I could get my greater powers, because I hadn't been leveling my magic skills very much prior to installing it. Gotta love being a werewolf though.
roboman43
yeah i still have a problem though, i ALWAYS make a new game xD whenever i start my oblivion i instantly get bored of my current game and just make a new one, i try and keep it interesting by adding my own little backstory about the character, but that doesnt last and soon there i am giving all map markers and running around doing absolutely nothing :P
majikmonkee
Well getting distracted is easy to do in Oblivion, even when you've seen the scenery many times before. It happens to be all the time. I try to limit my fast travel when I can, especially because it gives me "quality time" with my companions when we're not killing stuff, but sooner or later the impatient urges begin again. I too am addicted to "newness", though, and I've been ravenously seeking out great mods lately to fill that addiction.
Balakirev
I absolutely love modding my oblivion, i might have 100+ mods that i keep active at all times :P Welcome to The Configuration Game. ;) I've got 270+ mods running (thanks to a little merging). There are a few people in Bethsoft's forums that have as many as 500 going at once, though I think if any of them put that kind of effort into dealing with world hunger, they'd probably win a Nobel Prize for Peace. 3.im also looking for a good companion mod, maybe even a cool house full of scripted stuff and some nice armor and weapons, new meshes of course ;) Really good companions with individual touches really interest me, and I've got a few. Viconia deVir not only gives you a Dummer companion, but lets you travel through a huge mod called The Underdark. You'll have plenty of battles to face, lots of dialog and decisions to make, plus numerous rewards along the way. Also has an optional romance quest, if that floats your boat. Viconia can learn spells from you, has cloaking spells of her own, and good vocal comments. Companion Vilja is the most full-featured character-as-mod. Tons of comments about everything you encounter throughout the world, as well as her own views, plus an ability to get involved in conversation (such as it is) with select other companions. She also has a few intriguing quests, and you can send her off to gather herbs, do shopping, even make potions for you if she's gotten the ingredients. Arren has strong abilities, but well-defined preferences. You don't want to kill innocent NPCs, or he'll eventually leave you. Wants a share of your loot if you have 10,000 coins or more. Includes leveled monster summons. Saphira's Romance and the Djinni's Chamber introduces Saphira, as you might guess. Relatively tough quest battles at times, but you get a really attractive Ayleid home (and I don't like Ayleid architecture, but the images you can see of it will give an idea of what's been done), plenty of armor, weapons, and a djinni companion who will return to her summoning flask any time you request it. Doesn't like crime, comes with her own horse, turns into a mermaid if you go for a swim, fills soul gems, can mix potions and recharge weapons (with limitations), etc. Also with a romance quest, if that, etc. Note, the original is in German, but the translation is always comprehensible. Stoker Wolff is by the same guy who did Viconia. He also journeys with you on a lengthy Underdark quest that yields weapons and armor, among other things, but the battles are less intense. Given the fact that you meet Viconia down there in his company, it's best to do this mod first. Also optional romance quest. I've heard mixed things about Heart of the Dead. On the one had, it offers a choice of companions, a lengthy quest system, and plenty of loot. On the other hand, I've read an intelligent review that criticizes its inflexibility: things are forced on the character because the plot requires it, not because they're logical results, etc. Haven't played through it yet; up to you. This is also a list of companion mods, somewhat out of date as the list keeper had a child about a year ago, and is spending all his time understandably with his new family. Still, it's a great list, and also includes a lot of other quest mod systems, with plenty of description. Hope that helps. :)
majikmonkee
I read a couple of well written, well thought out reviews on HOD, possibly the one you were mentioning as well because it cited a similar complaint, and while I can identify the most likely areas the author of the review was referring to, it didn't interfere with my enjoyment of the mod at all. There were a couple of times where the responses I was forced to make didn't match anything I would actually have chosen to say, and a couple journal updates with a little too much of the author in the writing style, but I was enjoying the many excellent aspects of the mod so much these were easily overlooked. Heck, there were dialogue choices in vanilla Oblivion where I agreed with none of the responses, and I don't think I've played a single mod where I agreed with every response or course of action given. =D I also noticed a few of the reviews I read dated back to the very first release of the mod and I see it's undergone quite a few changes. Some interesting companion mods listed there. I currently have three companions, Ruin from Ruined-Tail's Tale, Kat from Heart of the Dead, and Ariana Trudeaux, who has no associated quest. All good and fine, but I'm in the market for a mage companion to round out my "party".

This is clearly a matter where different aspects of a mod determine whether one will find it very good, or illusion-breaking. The review in question does mention specific instances where the critic found it impossible to accept his options; but again, it's not the kind of thing where one person is obviously right, or wrong. Heck, there were dialogue choices in vanilla Oblivion where I agreed with none of the responses, Hundreds of those. There are many great things about Oblivion, but the dumbing down of its quests to get a younger audience of buyers wasn't among them. Some interesting companion mods listed there. I currently have three companions, Ruin from Ruined-Tail's Tale, Kat from Heart of the Dead, and Ariana Trudeaux, who has no associated quest. All good and fine, but I'm in the market for a mage companion to round out my "party". I've found no mages with quest systems, but then, the combat AI really isn't up to handling spells very intelligently. It doesn't need to when it's targeting you, but when it's working on your side, getting hit by reduced to a charcoal briquet from friendly fire isn't my idea of fun. ;) So I educate my companions in summoning spells and buffs, and leave most of the destruction school to myself. There are several CM Companion mages, though, if you want to go that route. Or you could enter the construction set and reset a companion you've got to a mage. majikmonkee
I agree with you, different folks appreciate different levels of immersion, and something that may not bother may might pull someone out of the game so to speak. One thing I did like about the mod is the puzzles forced the player to think, I imagine a lot of the younger Vanilla crowd probably deleted the mod after the first puzzle, which required interpreting a poem to figure out how to open a mysterious door. Thank goodness we have an intelligent modding community that doesn't always cater to people just looking for a fast and easy game. I've played with the CS to edit facial features and identify some object ID's for objects from mods I wanted, but never changed a character to a mage before. I was wondering what sort of dangers would exist in doing that and if I'd need to somehow change their stats. I was tempted to give one of my companions some magic staffs and a sword and hope they put the staffs to good use, but I can just see them blasting me in the back with a paralyze enchantment at the wrong moment...
