No music playing

So, I don't know why, but my music is not playing during the game or at the title screen. Note: I am not using a Steam version of the game, only the retail version with the official patches.

Here is what I have tried:

1. I made sure bMusicEnabled=1

2. I checked and have the minimum system requirements to play it (except for the video card, but that doesn't seem to be the problem)

My system:

Video Card = Intel® HD Graphics 3000

CPU = Intel® Core i3-2370M CPU @ 2.40GHz

CPU Speed = 2.40 GHz Performance Rated at: 5.28 HGz

RAM = 4.0 GB

OS = Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 (build 7601), 64-bit

Free Disk Space = 325.9 GB

Sound Card = IDT High Definition Audio CODEC

DVD-ROM = hp DVDRAM GT80N

DirectX Version = 11.0

3. Here is my Mod list (ordered by BOSS):

4. I also have these added in my game:

Oblivion PolyGone Overhaul [OPO]

Optimised Distant Land MAX 1_1 UL Patches

Reduced Distant Land Textures MAX 1_1

5. I used ArchiveInvalidationInvalidated!

6. I've read about making sure WMP (windows media player) is the default player for .mp3 and .wav files, so I tried that

7. I also read about the K-Lite codec pack and how some people said to use it while others said not to - I tried it, but it didn't seem to work (so I did a system restore to remove it)

8. I've read the Oblivion: Technical Support - No Music section that talks about how the music is the only problem and all other sounds/voices are working (this is what seems to be my problem) and they say the cause is installed DirectShow filters (codecs) conflicting with Oblivion, and that I should manually correct registries to initial state or install/uninstall K-Lite codec pack. Or to try InstalledCodec, or use Nightmare2013's Codec reset utility v4.1 (which only seems to work for Windows XP), but there was one on the Fallout nexusmods page that was created that could be used for Windows 7 users (made by someone else).

9. I have no idea what DirectShow filters would be the cause of the problem. I tried K-Lite, I tried InstalledCodec but wasn't sure which ones to disable/enable, and I tried the Windows 7 version of the Nightmare2013's Codec reset utility, but non seemed to get my music playing.

10. I have also done the obvious and checked to make sure the music files were there and not damaged or anything.

So, now I am needing some help, because I am at stuck. I'm hoping someone else knows some other possible solutions to the problem or some ideas on how to fix it. I really appreciate your time and help in advance!

Thanks!

What do you have in Oblivion.ini for bDSoundHWAcceleration and fMainMenuMusicVolume, and what slider position are you using for Music and Master in the Options menu?

Yes that's what I meant about slider position ... just looking for the obvious.

What happens if you change to bDSoundHWAcceleration=0 (looks to me like you just have an onboard sound chipset, maybe it's not capable of HW acceleration).

Nothing happens differently, sadly, but interesting to try.

Not sure if this is helpful or not, but I've been starting up/loading my games through obse-loader (I think one of mods requires or suggests it)...do you think that would effect the music at all?

Shouldn't ... if it did it would be widely reported. The only thing I recall hearing about that affects the game is codecs. Not sure if in your research into the problem you saw any of the tips in TweakGuide's Oblivion Tweak Guide (see page 7 Audio section down near the bottom of that page).

Looking on the HP site it appears that no new drivers have been released for that audio chipset in a couple of years. Looks like the latest is version 6.10.6491.0 ... is that the version you have?

well I have a HP Pavilion g6t-2000 CTO Notebook PC and I checked to see if I have the updated audio for my notebook and it's 6.10.6392.0 (which is what I have)

But I am going to try and download the audio driver update and see what happens (see if it says I can't install it).

Also, I have LAV Filters installed, and I'm wondering if I should remove that? (could that be a cause of anything?)

EDIT:

I didn't download it because it wasn't compatible with my notebook. I think it needs Windows 8 and most likely a different HP Pavilion notebook version

Not sure if this is helpful or not, but it looks like it lists what DirectShow Filters I have and also the sound information.

A couple of things I noticed when using this How to Interpret a DXDIAG Report page to filter through that report ...

Check on this page to see if it offers a more recent version of the Nightmare2013 utility (it says version 3.0 on that page).

Near the end of the how to interpret page is a post by Lee Carre with a sort of step by step you could try (why do some people never locate the Shift key on their keyboard ... do they never read what they post themselves?? /rant) ... here's what it says:

Lee Carre: start menu, settings, control panel
opened "sounds and audio devices"
went to the "hardware" tab and selected "audio codecs" (about half way down the list)
clicked "properties" at the bottom of the tab
on the "audio codecs properties" window, went to the "properties" tab
on the "properties" tab a list of codecs was displayed (i assume all the ones i have installed, i can list them here if requested)
i found one that looked most like an mp3 codec (it's called "Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec") and selected it (so it was highlighted)
i clicked the "properties" button at the bottom of the tab
in the window for the properties of the codec (hope you're following all these "properties" windows - this one has options to use/not use the codec and to change the priority) i changed the priority to "1", then clicked "OK"
now, a strange thing windows seems to do, that i discovered from past experience, is when you change the priority of a codec, for some reason, it becomes disabled (the "don't use the audio codec" option is selected), so, make sure the "Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec" is selected, and click "properties" again to re-open the options box
in the codec properties box (again), leave the priority at "1" and select "use this audio codec"
click "OK" again
click "OK" for "audio codecs properties"
and "OK" for "sounds and audio devices
once that was done i didn't need to restart for morrowind to play music,, character voices, and sounds etc., however, the experience of other users may be different
I'm not sure if that will be helpful or harmful.
I've also seen reports of problems with HP machines that were related to having an infrared device enabled ... check in Control Panel and see if you have such a device/device driver and try disabling it. Can't say for certain what the IR problem was related to ... seems to me it was something that Bben46 (one of the site moderators) always brought up. He has some links listed in his signature you could try for more info (try here).
- Edit - From what I see Googling your LAV Filters I'd say absolutely ... one of the first things I'd disable during troubleshooting.

I have checked out Nightmare2013 utility - there is a version 4.1, but it only works for windows xp.

Also, the instructions you pointed out sadly only appear to be for windows xp - windows 7 doesn't have the hardware tab for the sound devices...or at least from what I saw when I tried.

I did notice that I seem to have:

Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec (decode only) - l3codeca.acm

and

MP3 Decoder DMO - mp3dmod.dll

I'm not sure if I should have both or just one of them? I did download the Win7DSFilterTweaker 5.9 and it gives me 3 options to disable 1. preferred decoders, 2. MS codec tweaks, and 3. media foundation.

In the preferred directshow decoders, it lists 32-bit and 64-bit decoders and both have MP3 enabled...not sure if I should disable anything here? In the Microsoft codec tweaks, currently nothing is disabled, but it lists MP3 Decoder DMO and MP3 Decoder DMO (64-bit)...not sure if something here should be disabled?

When you say infrared devices, what exactly do you refer to? I'm not sure what I would be looking for...

Oh, and I removed the LAV filters, but that didn't do anything (not surprised).

But thanks for all the help and time so far!
