Pyromaniac's dream (Fire spreads to enemies, grass, wood buildings, ect.)

I was just playing a character with an incinerator earlier, basking in the literal glow of the scattered body parts of my foes, when I had a thought.

How much more glorious would this be if flaming body parts caught the grass and wooden buildings on fire?

I don't know if this would be even sort of possible, but I just thought it'd be a cool little feature. And have it spread to yourself if you're not careful, of course, say you just run over a burning corpse and that catches you on fire.

Hate to be a buzzkill, but I think it's impractical (at least as far as the only way I would know how to do it). I think for statics to catch fire you'd have to remake them using destructible models. You'd have a lot of flexibility in the model changes (some nice charred texture changes) and special effects......even limiting their behavior by weapons on the pryo formlist via script. But I don't think it's very likely anybody is going to take the time to convert so many models of combustible architectural or other static objects.......there's just too many.

In regard to landscape features like grass, you don't have that option. You might be able to edit a MPS to change some aspects like duration of flame, but your still pretty limited. You could probably script a solution to place some of the stock or custom static fires in an outward expanding area, but I think it would be riddled with problems and just a big ol bag of hurt. First off I don't think we have anything that could edit the landscape dynamically, to transform that grass to charred terrain.

Maybe someone else will have a better idea, but I think it's probably a dead end, unfortunately

For actors (in re: to your title; "Fire spreads to enemies") I think it's a more realistic goal, since we have some nice actor effects (like the one on "She" from HH). And you can probably spread the flame from one actor to another by creating a new MGEG based on a effect script, that is by touch and causes the next actor to CIOS a flaming actor effect on itself.

I think I could live with just the actors catching on fire, would still be pretty fun to watch.

I honestly didn't think the grass would be possible, although my thought was that the engine just wouldn't be able to handle it.

  • 2 weeks later...

WJS is already working on something like that in his continuous laser mod, ask him.

I think the central feature of actors lighting other actors on fire isn't part of his beam mod, but I can chat with him in regard to other aspects as we're PM'ing back and forth about another subject currently. However the script based spell effect should work fine, it's simple, at least in concept. by touch->CIOS->fire actor effect->script based damage.
