All right, can someone suggest a few immersion mods?

Trying to gather mods that would make the Oblivion experience a little, well, richer. Since Bethesda has decided to make this an "FPS with books" series - beautiful, of course, but stick to the "topics" conversation system like grim death, we will! - I've taken to fan content. The kinds of mods I'm looking for are hard to find, however, because scattered between the "Miscellaneous", "Gameplay Effects and Changes" and "Quests" categories on tessource.net.

Now just what am I looking for? Well, one example would be Geniel's "Portrait Painter", where you can have an NPC do a portrait of yourself, then hang it on a wall. The portrait isn't necessary for questing, it doesn't have magic powers that MAKE YOU A LIVING GOD, there's no epic battle with the forces of... whatever... It's just a little something that I might go for if I actually lived in the Imperial Province. A different case would be accurain's "Arcane Bank of Cyrodiil", a mod in which you collect gems to boost your regeneration rate and recharge items. This does concern the player's power level, but it sets up a goal that isn't all about being the meanest and toughest (or richest, whereupon you can finally afford to be the meanest and toughest). Yet another example is "Regional Bounties" by Tiddles_is_Psycho, because it allows my criminal-minded characters the freedom they would have in a pre-industrial, FBI-less society. I value those extra options and moves.

On the other hand, I don't care for petty mods where you can kill key NPC, grab the items you weren't supposed to etc. That sort of shallow "realism" only goes against the safeguards which Bethesda has put in to spare us "whoops" reloads. Anything more... substantial?

You might want a place to live. I've built this wonderful castle. It also has portals to each town so you can get around quickly without using the immersion shattering fast travel.

Get it here: http://www.tessource.net/files/file.php?id=5742

Also, I highly recomend Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul. It basically restructures a lot of the underlying mechanics of the game to make a much more enjoyable and more realistic experience. No more invincible townguards. No more goblins being able to match up to you at high levels.

Note that it is a relatively complex install process, but I assure you the mod is well worth it,

Enjoy!

My mod selection is probably a little dated, so there may be better choices available now, however I found many of the following to be of value in making Oblivion more immersive. You may not consider all of the following to be immersion mods as different people have different ideas about what makes a game more or less immersive. I hope some help.

--Natural Environments. I should assume you have this already.

--Imperial Furniture. Not perfect, (yet) but it allows you to put do some custom arranging of things in your house. Also, since some of the furniture is movable and havoc enabled, it means you can change the position of things you place. Candles, for example, shouldn't be nailed down to a tabletop.

--Darker Dungeons. Makes torches/light spells more necessary.

-Drop lit torches in Combat. Almost necessary for the above. And seriously, more fun than always using light or nighteye spells.

--Illumination Within. Windows light up at night.

--Alternate Night Eye Shaders. The default nighteye is good, but I get a headache if I use it for too long. Headache's may be a realistic and immersive part of what a real dungeon crawl would be, but certainly not a pleasant part. A different shader seems to solve that problem nicely.

--AliveWaters. I came across this just the other day and haven't tried it out, but the vanilla rivers are so barren that I have no doubt that this is an improvement.

--Cats and Rats. Nothing tastier. Shame you can't eat them.

Rebalancing and custom levelling mods tend to add a lot. Not just to battle, but also to everything else you do as adventuring. You've probably found one you like, already. However, a short list (and by no means complete) includes:

-OOO - Obscuro's Oblivion Overhaul - Very good, but not nearly modular enough for my tastes

-Francesco's - Slightly More modular, but less popular

-Random Clutter Overhaul - Only problem is some containers have way too much of one thing, like 100 rice.

-Kobu's Character Advancement System - Select the way your character will level and don't worry again about choosing what abilities to increase each level. Makes the levelling feel far less obtrusive, although with levelled lists and the levelling message, it's still not gone.

Retexturing mods make a large difference as well. So do sound effect mods.

-Parallax Cities

-Slof's Horses

-Book Jackets Oblivion- Gives every book it's own cover texture.

-Cutthroat Mods Better Wine

-Kafei's Better Ring Replacer

-Kafei's Better Amulet Replacer

-Real Lava

-Real Water

-More Immersive Sounds

-Better Bell Sounds

-Stormier Storms

-Rain

-Generic Dungeon Drones - Music (well, noise) for dungeons.

Last, don't forget to dig up a UI tweak. Whether you use DarkUI, Immersive Interface, or something completely different, you'll soon be wondering how you even played the game before.

Thanks for the suggestions, Lytenian and WarKirby. I've got OOO, some others and now I will definitely look into smaller mods. By the way, Alive Waters conflicts with OOO, supposedly. Don't yet know how heavily, though. Maybe if I load it last?

I love my Natural Environments, though I suppose that would also conflict with Alive Waters.

Instant environmental cleanup on the water in Tamriel and I can see past the end of my PC's nose...

Natural Environments is split up in a few esps: Water, creatures, weather and bigger trees (that's all I believe). If you would just use the creature, weather and bigger trees esp's there shouldn't be any compatibility problems with Alive Waters right?
