WastedWanderer
What's missing from the new generation of Fallout games that was a key part of the originals? Random encounters. It was always fun just heading across the wastelands of Fallout 1 & 2, but you couldn't just travel the length of the map without interruption. There was always the threat of violence from raiders or roaming death claws. Why not bring this classic scenario back to the world of Fallout: New Vegas. I think it would really add a lot to the game. When a player fast travels across the wasteland there would be a chance that they could be stoped along their journey by a pack of feinds or mutants. This is not only realistic and truer to the original games, it would be nice for players who enjoy killing stuff to get xp. what do you think? civerius
Just download a zombie survival mod :D or better yet, download the mod, and tweak it by changing the models, or maybe asking the author to release a different version of it. Why start anew or request from scratch (which is perhaps less likely to happen) when you can always have something to work with. Just my opinion, as I actually feel New Vegas has a pretty good random encounter feel. I actually walked from one edge of the map to the other and actually had quite a few fiends, raiders, NCR, gang members (forgot the gang name, type of snake) random ghouls, even some encounters where characters walked up to me and opened dialogue. Perhaps there is something you are not doing, or you've not played every single content, within the game? simplywayne90
I miss the funny and or sarcastic special encounters. Heres me quoting myself from another thread I thought maybe the special encounters could be in a similar way to upgradeable player homes, where things disappear and appear only after you've met the requirements, maybe with the encounters they'd be placed in commonly traveled areas and after you pass through a number or times or do a certain number of quests it shows up and then it disappears again after your done with it. Idk just something I'd thought about, I'd love to see the kinds of funny encounters that people can come up with. (For ideas on the old ones, check earlier posts and theres videos of them) Edit: Also like how megaton became a crater after the nuke, how changing a cell like that can make a special encounter! Heres the thread since we talked about encounters for maybe 2 pages or so.Fun/Silly/Interesting Mods, And Mod Ideas

Plus it would be helpful because a lot of players find walking around to be boring, this way people who fast travel a lot would still get to partake in random events. simplywayne90
This probably could be done through scripting like if pc = fast travel to so and so then 40% chance of encountering (fiends, deathclaws, manti, NCR Rangers) But as you can see I'm no scripter but I put that up to give scripters an idea of how it could be done The main thing guming the works is how to interrupt fast travel, and then pick an area that doesn't already have spawns (since you don't want to encounter a group of deathclaw spawn points, and a group of enclave soilders who all focus on killing you first) Still this may be possible, and if it is then maybe special encounters can make a comeback too, so I'm happy both ways. Woo hoo for me. Edited December 9, 2010 by simplywayne90

adman85
Yes, fast travel encounters! I don't even fast travel anymore unless i'm encumbered because it sucks.. The timescales messed up, and like civerius said, you encounter so much more just plain walking.I'd love to see it happen, but would these encounters happen in the real world, or would you have to create new areas for each encounter?A bit off topic but.One problem I've found when running to a place instead of fast traveling is that sometimes an exterior won't load properly (LOL) and there will be a massive square of terrain that hasn't loaded, that if you walk into, you fall for a mile then land in a square of water, where if you don't die on impact you can swim back out any of the sides (i know, WTF), the other problem with this is that the second time it happened to me the missing square was dead in the middle of novac, and when i fell through, I noticed other, dead, floating, NPCs in the square of water and i thought, wow, did the game just kill some quest characters? Then i quit game and reloaded and it was fine... Weird huh?

Perhaps there is something you are not doing, or you've not played every single content, within the game? I thought I had read somewhere, complaints about there be no random encounters whatsoever in FNV? As you wander you encounter placed spawn points (like a nearby Legion camp, a drive-in (Vipers you are thinking about, they are at the drive-in I mention - not the one near Primm though), Powder Ganger Camp, casador nest, scorpion nest, etc. Kill what is there continue on your way and when the cell reloads (I believe), and you return, the baddies are back. Then, as the original poster is saying, when you fast travel and onbviously seem to have passed through that area again, you don't even get the damn spawned raiders! Heh, in the old FO1 & 2 and Tactics, sometimes your fast travel would be interupted for somethng quite offbeat (based upon your luck) which was equal to the new Wild Wastelands trait, which I don't bother taking any more as it is a waste and the 'wildness' is pretty much lame. Anyone remember the 'nude' drawing you found from the Titanic movie? It did make me chortle. :)

simplywayne90
I've posted one of my possible methods on the troubleshooting forum, since i'm not a modder I wanted to get some opinions on if it will function, if so then all we would need is a very passionate Classic Fallout player and modder, who is bored enough to take the time and make it well.
