Tenlethar
Hi! I was setting up my gaming machine from the scratch while switching from ATI 5870 (with which Oblivion was not playable for me) to an NVIDIA GTX 480 AMP! from ZOTAC. Running the game i will get flickering grass polygons, usually a little more distant from me. Reflections on the water will jump around like crazy while strafing/moving in a direction. I also get shadow flickering for shadows that are rendered on grass (i keep this option off, but knowing about the issue may be helful). I did all kinds of testing. I tested the whole thing with a vanilla install, i tested it on Windows XP 32-Bit AND Windows 7 64-Bit. I tested it with reverted drivers (258.96). I even tested it with a GTX 470 from ZOTAC. But nothing seemed to make a difference. I also tried with lowest detail settings, different resolutions, i even tried with 60Hz (as i use a 120Hz monitor). I tested with AF and AA on and off, with and without HDR. A video of the graphic glitch i get can be seen here. Notice the flickering grass in front of me (further away) as well as the flickering grass at where the player's shadow falls on to. I do also have another problem in the game with harddisk access: opening containers will delay my game for an approximate of 1,2 to 1,5 seconds. Somehow the game freezes in that time. I thought this would be related to harddisk access times, so i installed an SSD 80 GB (new one) and copied the game folder onto it, then launched the game from in there: zero difference :( I did not have those issues on my old computer i once had, so i can't get myself to believe that it has to be that way. -------------------------------My system: I currently run NVIDIA drivers 260.99 and the drives all run in AHCI mode (i only use SATA drives). All my drivers are up-to-date, including chipset and all that comes along with it. Any help rocks! Ps.: I now reverted back to NVidia driver 197.75 for testing, but ended up having the very same results. The flickering remains :/ Edited December 5, 2010 by Tenlethar
Hickory
I have seen a few reports of odd graphic anomolies witht he GTX 480. It may be that you have your GPU control panel managing AA? Oblivion was never designed to use both HDR and AA at the same time. Have you tried setting your GPU control panel to 'Application Controlled'? Yep, just a few minutes ago i have been through all kinds of NV Control Panel settings. I noticed that when i turn AF to anything than application controlled, all grass will start to shimmer. However, even if its set to application controlled, the polygon flickering will appear. Please note that i also tried using my GTX 470 and got the same results. Hickory
Have you tried turning AA of altogether, ie. in-game and control panel? I know that's not really desirable, but it may help you troubleshoot if it's an AA issue with the GTX drivers.
Tenlethar
Yep, i tried with AA off and on, AF same :( I even tried grass mods now.. but it doesnt seem to help :/
Hickory
Ok, what about the refresh rate in--game. Have you tried using a different resolution and/or refresh rate? Just a thought.

Yep, i tried it at 60 Hz and 120 Hz. I now even went through the whole Oblivion Tweak Guide and tuned around with every setting, trying to see any improvements or changes regarding the glitch, but all to no avail. I also replaced the grass textures using various mods, trying if that helps, but it doesnt. What would i give for an Oblivion christmas time :/
Tenlethar
Alright. I now removed NVidia drivers completely, shut down my system, put in a classic ATI 5870, booted up, removed the Oblivion configs, ran Oblivion and had it create standard configs, then tested the same game scenes now with the ATI card - and the results: Problem persists !! This is really odd. It can only mean that it has nothing to do with the graphics card, or it means that both NVIDIA and ATI/AMD have missed out on something important for Oblivion in their drivers? Edit: I now ran another test with an ATI 4870 - getting the same results again. In any case, i am stuck :( Edited December 5, 2010 by Tenlethar
Hickory
That is odd, because I have an ATI HD-4870 (drivers 10-11) and I do not have that problem. I can only suggest that there is something you have installed that is causing this. Maybe it's time to do a clean reinstall and note everything down as you install them until (or if) this problem re-emerges?

Maybe it's time to do a clean reinstall and note everything down as you install them until (or if) this problem re-emerges? You're right. Its terribly odd. After speaking to a PC guy from the store i think it can only be either something software related, like a program or something, as you said (or a driver for one of my components) or it is some problem with the motherboard, memory, cpu or PSU (while the latter seems pretty improbable). Lets think through what i usually do when i set up (like i did two days ago). * Boot with Windows 7 CD and run setup* Format Partition to install on* Install Windows 7 on that* Boot up and configure windows (Firewall=off (i am not online with this machine), Defender off, Indexing off, Superfetch off, etc.)* Install chipset drivers for motherboard* Install ethernet adapter, AHCI/RAID and all the other drivers that came from ASUS for my mainboard* Install DX11 update* Install graphics card drivers* Install Logitech Setpoint for G5 Gamer Mouse* Install all Windows updates that are not security updates (for that i once connect to the net) I think that's it. Is there something missing, or am i doing something wrong?
