TheNeutralGood
So i went to go get mercy. In that cave there are tons of deathclaws... Anyhow Veronica goes charging in into like 4 of them. So i wipe out the gobi and just start firing from the hip. I kill a few of them when what I think is a mother deathclaw gets in the way. I dont bother using vats, so i put 3 shots into him without really aiming and he died... Later when i go to check for eggs i noticed it was the legendary deathclaw. Sure he killed veronica but he didnt even get Ed-E before I killed him. Legendary my butt.
secksegai
I would assume you're not on the very hard difficulty, since deathclaws can one/two shot folks if they get in close enough. I've never had trouble with him on any difficulty and he's never killed any of my followers. However, it doesn't mean he isn't worthy of the title. Trying to take him one with a melee focused character would really show just how mean he is. But if the above is your normal encounter, you should try the unmarked location "Deathclaw Promontory". Assuming it actually loads properly and fully populated, you should get the challenge you're looking for ;)
pjz
Well you were using one of the very best weapons in the game, it has immense base damage and x5 crit modifier.
Johssy
"I shot this animal with one of the best weapons in the game, and he died after three shots, pffft, unrealistic." Three shots from a sniper rifle will take down most anything y'know? I had a far worse time getting him down, but I kinda went in that cave without any sort of motivation other than "ooo a cave!". Is there some sort of quest related to killing the legendary types? EDIT; Also, from Fallout wikia; "The Legendary deathclaw is the strongest creature in Fallout: New Vegas. It is found at Dead Wind Cavern. It is by far the most powerful in the game, considering its ability to ignore damage threshold, its own very high DT, and that it is capable of dealing enough damage to kill even some level 30 players in one hit. " Sounds pretty legendary to me. ;) Edited December 7, 2010 by Johssy
ita
There are no rewards, though you get to feel all smug about yourself for killing some of the toughest critters the Wasteland has to offer ;)
WarKirby3333
Well you were using one of the very best weapons in the game, it has immense base damage and x5 crit modifier. I have to disagree with this being the problem. The weapon exists for a reason - to be used. If the most powerful enemy in the game can diue easily to it, that is a problem with obsidian's balance team, not the player. Maybe this is just my opinion, but I feel that if you want a harder experience, you should raise the difficulty, and ONLY that. Other than that, the player should never limit themselves, and with the exception of obvious bugs or exploits, should do everything in their power to overcome the challenges the game places before them. Deliberately not using the most powerful weapon you have, would be silly. To the OP: What difficulty were you playing on? Although it sounds dramatic, I don't see this as much of an achievement unless it was Very Hard. I killed The Legendary Gecko on Very Hard in one shot :D
TheNeutralGood
I know its the most powerful gun in the game... But come on. I almost killed him by accident. shooting from the hip, and i now realize i was just using normal rounds...

secksegai
You must have missed the whole "melee-focused character" bit. There is no "challenge" to ranged unless you're a terrible shot and/or have terrible equipment. Or upgrade your enemies a bit through modding. If one uses VATS then he/she forfeits any right to be complaining about things being too easy. But the promontory isn't a cake walk, unless the spawns screw up. It isn't hard, but its not a place you can just run around and shoot unless you're on lower difficulties, the spawns failed, or you use vats. But seriously complaining/bragging that things are too easy from a ranged perspective is pretty silly. Expecting enemies to be hard when they rarely even see you before they die makes no sense. I don't even try the melee focused character because as far as I can tell the vanilla game doesn't have the wherewithall to do it with any style. Sure, I keep a big Morealin weapon for close encounters but I can only strike or block with it. I cannot target body parts in VATS and have no special moves worth the name. We don't need a 'Riddick'-ulous amount of melee controls but as far as I'm concerned we don't have any!
