Companion Mod Question

Alright I'll come right out and say upfront, I'm embarrassed to be asking this but as I have often times encountered in other games, Real World Logic doesn't always apply towards games.

TLDR Version:

Do Companions follow exactly the same rules as Players regarding what their skills let them do? I.E. power attacks, sneaking limitations, etc?

Longer version with more explanation as to why I'm asking this:

My question is in regards to Companion Mods, I tend to favor the more sophisticated ones like Neeshka, Sonia, Ruined Tail, etc. And in particular, the skills the Companions have when you have them join up for your travels. It would seem logical that all the rules governing player characters and how they perform in the game, affects their Companions on exactly the same basis. I.E. lets say Sneak for example. Up till a PC hits 50 in Sneak, he needs to stick with Light Boots or he has a harder time sneaking. So my assumption would be, the same applies to my Companion.

However my assumptions were thrown in total doubt when a friend of mine who also plays Oblivion, and favors stealth oriented characters, that he never worries about his Companions, he puts whatever looks good or is most functional on them and it hasn't affected his ability to sneak. His belief is that all Companions are merely shadows of the Player. Thus if the Player makes next to no noise sneaking, neither will the Companion, especially if they're "essential". My counter was all that Essential does is means that so long as you don't die, they'll just go unconscious and wake up again, and if their skills didn't matter, why do they have a value next to them? The problem is, he's a lot more computer savvy than I am when it comes to scripts, coding, and that sort of thing, so typically, he's right about such things. And so I'm wondering if I'm wasting my time trying to find a good stealth capable Companion or if I should just grab whichever is the most appealing one and go spelunking with no more care. :ermm:

I don't know for certain but I would almost swear I've been detected when I normally would not have been because of a companion, in my case Kat, Ariana or Ruin-Tail. I have no real proof except I don't normally get detected and companions seemed to change that.
