mini freeze

i seem to have an issue in certain parts of the game, its always the same parts and its when im outside, as i get closer to something and it needs to render a lot of new detail i get a mini pause and a drop in fps, it happens at the same points each time, it isnt random. ive tried different drivers, defragmenting, its not my hdd as i have a raid 0 array with fast transfer, it only seems to happen in this game i have found other people with a similar issue. is it the decompressing of the textures? and what can i do to remedy it? it only happens when running through the wastes and loading detail in front of me, but it isn';t my hardware :( i have a raid 0 which averages about 100mb/s. a gtx 460, a q6600 b3 at 3.2ghz and 4gb or ram, it happens at specific points in the wastes but once its "loaded" if i go back a long way away and go over the spot again it doesnt happen so its the first time its "loaded" into memory i guess. fallout new vegas stutter remover helps a bit and setting max pre rendered frames to 8 in nvidia control panel helps a bit. it only happens at specific points, from what ive read its been an engine issue since oblivion something to do with bad mem management, just looking for a way to reduce it. i tried reinstalling game, video drivers, even a clean windows install unfortunately still there. Yeah, I have that issue too but it doesn't bother me. What you can try though is using ifpsclamp. It's a setting in the .ini files that uses v-sync to keep your frame rate stable. Some people swear by it, but I haven't tried it myself. Just make sure that v-sync is enabled when you try this.

i will give this a try, but this looks to clear up microstutter, i dont have any microstutter, only stutter when it renders new things in the distance, and its not very often i have to run a long way in the wastes for it to come to a new bit it needs to load, and then i get a mini freeze depending on the part of the game depending on how long it lasts, considering the game normally runs at about 65-75 fps during these mini freezes it can dip to 20 something. its only at these specific points....stupid game engine....

Yeah, it's pretty useless. Do you have the D3d9.dll fix? it's for issues with stutter with npcs on screen but from what I hear, it generally improves performance all around. Another thing you can do is right-click on your new vegas exe and go to compatibility settings and check, "Disable Visual Themes". It is supposed to boost performance as well.

There is a whole list of fixes at this site and is probably the most extensive resource at the moment. I used it's fallout 3 version and it was a godsend.

Changing these parameters below has some effect on overall performance including loading time:

iNumHavokThreads=5

iThreads=9

iOpenMPLevel=10

By default, only the first exists in the various ini files for FONV. So you'll have to add the other two, ithreads and openmplevel. Add them in the [HAVOK] section where numhavokthreads already is. I don't want to scare you but I set mine to this:

iNumHavokThreads=128

iThreads=128

iOpenMPLevel=100

I don't know how high they'll go but I noticed an improvement every time I increased it past the default value. So I went as high as I thought it would be useful. I'm not worried about my machine, I'm pretty sure it can handle thousands of threads. I used taskman to gauge the effect. If the CPU works harder, it means there's more work to be done. Changing the values to those above seemed to give my CPU more work to do. It had a very noticeable effect in game too. Scenes seemed to load so much faster that there was virtually nothing to load once I got somewhere or fast traveled. FONV still seems to use only one CPU out of the four available though. But my goal is not to use all cores, it's to increase game performance. The bottleneck in this game is the CPU. A video carb such as mine can handle it just fine at frame rates as high as 180 with all settings to max and beyond. But as soon as it requires lots of CPU work, performance drops accordingly.

Also change the values for multithreading and background loading to enable everything there. To gauge performance, you can use EVGA Precision, a small tool that includes a frame rate counter that you can see in game.
