You need to install v287 then 290 as certain files needed by 290 are in previous archives.

Upon reinstalltion you need to ensure you properly install Wrye Bash and the Python Libraries. Proper procedure is as follows.

  1. Go to Control Panel and remove anything with the word Python in it.
  2. Next, uninstall Wrye Bash and delete the Mopy folder. If you used the installer version you should have an uninstaller as well.
  3. After you have removed everything related to Python and Wrye Bash it's time to reinstall, properly.
  4. Install WryePython03a from the Wrye Bash page here on TESNexus
  5. Install Wrye Bash 275 from the Self-Installer
  6. Update to Wrye Bash 287 by overwriting the Oblivion\Mopy folder.
  7. Finally, Update to Wrye Bash 290 by again overwriting the Mopy folder.
  8. Go to your Oblivion Mopy folder and create a shortcut for Wrye Bash Launcher.pyw and send to desktop.
  9. You're done! Double click the shortcut and Wrye Bash should launch and you're good to go.

Wrye Bash v291 will be released as a full Self-Installer version and will eliminate many of the above steps. It's currently in BETA and it's working very well, I've had virtually no problems with v291. The full release to the public should happen in the near future so keep your eyes open for it.

The Wrye Bash Pictorial Guide for Newbies is also and excellent way to get your hands dirty with Wrye Bash. Check it out!

If Wrye Bash fails to start or you are still having issues, you need to post the bug dump information here or in the Official Thread @ BethSoft for someone to look over.

Good luck!

@Smooth613: I would like the option to quote with credits your instructions above, should I need to advise somebody on installing Wrye Bash, if that's alright with you?

Did as you said but Wrye Bash didn't install properly and won't start. Found out that the uninstall program doesn't work leaving WB & Python26 folders and files behind, after uninstalling either with Start/Wrye Bash/Uninstall or Control Panel/Add Remove Programs! Had to finally uninstall Oblivion to ensure I didn't have any left-over old files, and then re-install it.

FYI:Another thing, when installing Oblivion outside "Program Files' the Uninstall program can't find 'setup.exe' to start the uninstall, forcing the use of the CD setup.exe to uninstall which also leaves folders behind - but Oblivion is cleaned from the registry.

Anyways, just to get this straight Smooth613... after installing the 275 self-installer into the Oblivion folder, I 'm supposed to extract all the 287 Archive files into the Oblivion/Mopy folder? I have done this and it still doesn't install properly (the Desktop shortcut doesn't open the program and in the Start menu, Wrye Bash only shows the Uninstall option, no Launcher). Also I'm unsure how to export the 275/290 Archive updaters (presumably into MOPY). During the overwriting process of both Archive versions, there is an option to overwrite 'all files' or just the 'old files', which option should I choose for each? I have used both options at different times and WB still doesn't install properly. I CAN get it to start up after the initial program installs, just it's the 275 version. It seems to be at least the 287 updating process that's derailing my WB install.

In my journey I've come across the possibility that there could be something wrong with Python which was the program I installed first. So I did a bug dump as you suggested (learned how to on 'www.wryemusings.com'), and there is indeed a problem with a missing .png file, so I'll post it where you have suggested and see if that solves my installation problems. Thanks everyone for your interest and help in this matter...just knowing there's help makes the journey a little easier.

Actually you're not following the steps exactly. Step 2 clearly states to uninstall AND delete... You must do the deletion manually. Next step 3 clearly states after you have removed everything related to Python and Wrye Bash.... So that means you need to again delete any folders left over after using the uninstaller and/or control panel. Then you would need to re-read step 8 to fix your shortcut error.

If you're getting some error post it for us to see and maybe more advice could be offered.

**EDIT** I just seen your bug dump at BethSoft and you are missing an image file. alt3n1ty mentioned this as well but I'll repeat here. The file you are missing is in the v287 archive (and possibly other previous) at the following path -- Mopy\Images. So you didn't properly update to v287 as mentioned in step 6. All you do is copy and paste the Mopy folder over the current one in your Oblivion directory. Then follow that again in step 7 to get to v290. You can directly extract the Wrye Bash update Archives to your Oblivion folder or extract them to a temporary location and copy/paste them there. Either works.

  • 3 weeks later...

I appreciate your help guys, I've discovered how immensely deep and difficult this game has become with all the 3rd party mods and all. It seems impossible to make it all work for everybody all the time.

But to keep you updated.....

I installed Wrye Bash numerous times with the updates and it still doesn't work (WinXp Pro, sp3), so I decided to work with just the 275 version ONLY and installed OBMM and a few mods like "Vilja", "Apachii Godess Store" & "HGEC Body" for instance. These work just fine and I've been playing happily since my last post with fewer crashes. Since I started a new game I don't suffer from the 'animation A-bomb problem and I'll be able to retry the Azani Blackheart quest (my original problem post) again when I get to it. BTW, my last Azani Blackheart save still won't work, it continues to freeze at the same loading area (going into the ruins) even though I've got WB 275 installed....too bad because I was at a high level- maybe it'll work with the new WB?

So, for now, I'll keep it like it is until the latest installer version of Wrye Bash comes out and I'll be able to add the other recommended mods. This is the best solution I've come across for now, it isn't ideal but I can live with it. Thanks again for your committed interest and help in our newb probs. This site and game is the best. HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone.

I'd like to assure you, Smooth613, I have done as you've suggested and manually deleted everything I could find that was related to the original Wrye Bash install. I found and deleted a Python 26 folder that was still there after uninstalling it from Control Panel and also the MOPY and old WB folders. I mentioned that to ensure everything was completely deleted, I even uninstalled Oblivion to erase any files or folders that I might have missed. Yep, did delete everything and re-installed everything back again clean. I agree that I could have missed something in my first install, because I didn't know the proper process, however, now I've done this so many times, I'm beginning to wonder if there's a problem with my download file.

Anyways, to avoid anymore unnecessary frustration on both our parts, I've decided to live with my setup for now. You can read my final post and update (posted before this one). Thanks again for you assistance... it's great to know the knowledge and experience is there when you need it.
