Parakleet
I was thrilled to pick up the Star of Azura at level 3. What I'm finding now, however, is that it won't hold any soul higher than "Lesser". I thought it was supposed to be a grand soul gem! Is its capacity going to scale with my character as I level up (I'm level 5 now), or am I stuck with an infinitely reusable gem that's going to be all but useless in another few levels? Sypron
A mod called "quest award leveling" should fix you up, or maybe your soul trap spell isn't good enough?
Malchik
If it is filled, at whatever level, it will not take a higher level soul. So if it has a lesser soul it will stay that way until you empty it by using it.
Parakleet
The Star is empty, and when I try to trap, say, a Dremora or a bandit, I'm told that I don't have a stone large enough to hold the soul. Though the message refers to the stone rather than the spell, would a more powerful soul trap spell possibly work?
Malchik
Ah well, the problem is not with the star. Dremora and humans cannot be trapped in ordinary soul gems, you need black soul gems for them.
Rhydderch Hael
Well, there's your problem— at level 3, I doubt you'll find a creature with a soul much larger than Lesser grade. That's the beauty of the Black Soul Gem— it's the only way for a very low-level character to pick up Grand charges (by trapping humanoid souls). Once you get farther in the game, creatures with Greater and Grand souls become ubiquitous and you can start bringing the Star up to capacity. The Soul Trap spell doesn't get "better" with higher levels. Soul Trap is an all or nothing proposition— if you cast it on a target, that target is "tagged" (unless the target has high enough Spell Absorption/Reflection to shrug it off like any other magic spell lain upon it). The higher levels of Soul Trap will only increase the duration or how many targets are caught in the "blast" of the spellcast. Probability of a successful Soul Trap is not affected, because probabilty that your Soul trap will work is always going to be 100% under normal circumstances. Parakleet
Ah well, the problem is not with the star. Dremora and humans cannot be trapped in ordinary soul gems, you need black soul gems for them. D'oh!!! Thanks for the info, everyone. I guess it's time for me to get back to work for the Mages Guild again...
Tiberiu911
Ah well, the problem is not with the star. Dremora and humans cannot be trapped in ordinary soul gems, you need black soul gems for them. I always wandered what those where used for. I keep giving my Azura star to Martim every single time, I should perhaps find another daedric artifact. Anyways, the monsters will change as you progress in level, and you will find monsters with bigger souls.
Strider01
A mod called "quest award leveling" should fix you up, or maybe your soul trap spell isn't good enough? Eh the Azura Star is not a leveled item I think, it's just because the monsters' souls are all petty at level 3... Just want to recommend a mod that replace the original Azura Star for those who find it not very useful, a great upgrade to me. Called the Black Azura's Star. This is different from regular soul gems; it is not used directly. Whenever you have the Black Azura's Star in your inventory, black soul gems become reusable; after using a filled black soul gem to recharge an item or enchant an item, you will be left with an empty one. The idea is that the soul, when used, is channeled through the Black Azura's Star, thus emptying your black soul gem, instead of destroying it. No more trips to resupply your black soul gems, and just carrying a few should be enough.
