CTD on save

Like the title says, my game crashes to desktop every time I make a save. This is true for quicksaves, new saves, saving over an older save and streamline saves (autosave is turned off). Because it does this in the middle of saving, all these attempted saves are corrupt. The first ten minutes or so after starting the game are fine and I can save, but after that I get a CTD every single time. It hasn't happened to me before, so I don't know if it has anything to do with mods, but it's happening in an interior cell added by a mod (Verona House Bloodlines). I'm sort of stuck in this cell, so there's not much room to play around there.

 

Here's what I've tried so far (unsuccessfully):

 

- corrected my load order using BOSS and Wrye Bash

- installed every crash prevention mod I think there is

- removed bloat from all savegames with Wrye Bash

- searched for solutions all over the internet (many people seem to have this problem, but no fix)

- moved the Verona House mod to the end of the load order

- used coc to get to an exterior, vanilla cell and tried to save there

(Here's where I get desperate)

- One user was having trouble with Harvest: Flora, so I tried removing that one

- Disabled Streamline in case that was the culprit. It wasn't.

Obviously this has rendered the game completely unplayable, so I'm willing to try any crazy thing you can think of to fix this. Pretty desperate here :confused:

You say it's happening in a mod added cell, well the natural thing to do would be to leave that cell and try saving elsweyr. Use the console command "coc testinghall" (without quotes) and that will teleport your character to the testinghall cell. (You can "coc" to any cell you wish, another popular choice is "coc Weye".) Try to save there and see what happens. Does it work? If not I suggest you start by disabling the mod in question and try again.

 

If you still have issues you should start a new game and see if you can make saves from a new character with the same Load Order. If you cannot create new saves with a fresh character with the same LO it's likely an issue with a mod. You would need to systematically disable mods until you find exactly which one is the culprit. However, if you can successfully save under a new character with the exact same LO it's likely something is causing the issue from within your save file you are loading from. In that case the only option you have is to go back to previous saves until the problem is rectified. But then you're rolling the dice and the problem might just reoccur due to some bit of information being saved from a mod.

Yes, I did try that, both in testinghall and a vanilla exterior cell. Did not work.

 

Try to save there and see what happens. Does it work? If not I suggest you start by disabling the mod in question and try again.

It doesn't work, but the problem with disabling the mod is that it's a quest mod (Verona House) and that I'm near the end of that quest, which has taken me many, many hours to complete. If I was sure that would solve the problem I'd do it (reluctantly), but I'd rather not go through the entire quest again if it can be helped.

Another problem is that I'm stuck in the cell added by the mod, so I can't delete it, and I can't create a save outside the mod-added cell, for obvious reasons, to test if I can save without the mod active.

 

If you still have issues you should start a new game and see if you can make saves from a new character with the same Load Order.

Saving with a new character does work.

Indeed. So... that's my best option for now? I'll try that, and I'd like to thank you very much for the help so far, but if there's any other ideas I'd be very grateful. It's just that I'd like to know what's causing this so I can rectify the problem and not constantly worry about it.

 

Would a new install of the game and mods help? I'm guessing it won't, but is there a chance it might help?

Also, I loaded the game without OBSE, on a whim really, and I could save without crashing again. I'm using 0019b.

 

Bizarrely, the problem seems to be AFK_Weye (OBSE version of the mod). I'm happy to have figured this out, but it is a problem: the house added by that mod is where I keep all my stuff. Unique weapons and armor, alchemy ingedients, everything. Is there any way of getting my stuff out off there so I can safely remove the mod?

If the house is a part of the problematic mod, then it may be the very cause of your problems. However, if the cell where your house and its' items are NOT the same cell as the one that causes your suspected CTD, then you could simply equip your character with a "Feather 65535 pts on Self" and pluck the items out before disabling it.

 

I highly suggest that, if you try this, you avoid keeping any items which are scripted or any functional, non-vanilla items (custom-function weapons). It might be safer (and possibly more fun?) to start your collection over though.

I suspect that would solve the problem, but I can't test it because I'm stuck in a rather interesting catch-22. If I disable the mod, I can save my game but lose all my items. If I leave the mod enabled, I can get my items, but I can't save after I've gotten them. :wallbash:

 

I wouldn't have a problem starting my collection over, but some of these items are unique. Deadric quest items and the like. I guess I can just make a list of everything in the house that I want to keep and use the console to get them back (and use tgm to haul it all around) but after 140+ hours of gameplay, that'd be quite a list.

This probably would not work, but have you tried saving the game via console command?

 

SAVE <filename> [1]

 

If the CTD is somehow being caused by an interaction between the act of saving, and the UI, then this would be a solution to the problem - since it would bypass the UI. Also, if you add the [1] switch, it will output a verbose file in TXT format along with the save. Being able to collect a verbose file might be a good enough reason to try this anyway, because you can post it for others to see what mods are enabled for that save.

Kicking myself for not mentioning this earlier, but I had sort of gotten used to it. Lately I've been getting these messages every time I boot up the game:

It never affected anything as far as I could see, so I'd gotten into the habit of ignoring it. Stupid, I know. Anyway, I have no idea why this started popping up all of a sudden when it hadn't before. I did not do anything to my saves and wasn't playing without Pluggy. Maybe this has something to do with it?

 

(I use Pluggy v125b and OBSE19b, mainly for COBL)
