theRAIDER
In light of the release of Oblivion (a long time ago, I know, but I'm going to get around to buying it now), I've decided to tie up loose ends in Morrowind, meaning I'm finding and exploring every single dungeon, ruin, and tomb there is, pouring over every single item and weapon and making all sorts of enchanted crap I'll never use. Which is how I stumbled upon something strange. In a tomb somewhere north of Molag Mar (or somewhere Ashland-like; I forget specifically where, but I saved outside it; I just don't feel like checking), I found a sorceror by the name of Crazy Batou that attacks me on sight. When I killed him, I get one of those creepy "The-Thread-of-the-Prophecy-Has-Been-Severed" messages. Normally this wouldn't bother me; I'd just reload a recently saved game and leave the character alone. But when I checked his body I found a really good item called the Bloodworm Helmet I want to get. I'm using a character in which I have never gotten around to finishing the Main Quest on, if that helps. Now, I have completed the Main Quest for other characters, and I know "Crazy Batou" has absolutely no figuring in it. Or does he? Does this character have some part in the Main Quest I haven't discovered? Or is this just a glitch in my game?
Dilvish
That's not unique to your game. Crazy Batou thinks he's essential but he's not. He's freaking crazy to think that. I think there's one or two more non-essential NPCs that also give the Doomed World message.
Sypron
I discovered a little something once regarding essential characters; the message you get is only "a message"you can resurrect your target and still complete the main quest fine.

Dilvish
I think Lord Cluttermonkey is one of them. Maybe they left the essential flag on him just to worry the cheaters?
Tiberiu911
I think Lord Cluttermonkey is one of them. Maybe they left the essential flag on him just to worry the cheaters? Or maybe they had something in mind about him, so they flaged him essential. And after that they forgot or didnt had enought time, so he remained the same. Malchik
I discovered a little something once regarding essential characters; the message you get is only "a message"you can resurrect your target and still complete the main quest fine. That is not necessarily the case. If a character is resurrected you can interreact with that character as if he/she had not been killed. HOWEVER if that impinges in any way on other characters' assessment of what you have done it will not work. For example, if you accidentally kill Sharn gra-Muzgob in the mages guild when trying to open her locked chest you can resurrect her and she will continue in the mages guild as though nothing had happened. When you get the Blades quest to speak to her she tells you exactly what to do but when you try to report to Cosardes he will say she is dead and there is no way to progress the main quest at all. This is because the game has recorded her as dead. It is possible to change that using the console but not simply by resurrecting her.

Povuholo
Who the hell is Lord Cluttermonkey??? He is an NPC made in the clutter warehouse cell; A cell used for testing the game that you can only reach with the console: COC “Clutter Warehouse – Everything Must Go!” (Yes you need to type the exclamation mark). Malchik
You will get the same warning for characters that DO matter to the main quest but after they have fulfilled their function. Crassius Curio for instance is needed to become Hortator of House Hlaalu. He has no part in the main quest after that but if you kill him you get the same warning. There are also different ways to complete the game. For example you can complete the main quest without Vivec, via a rather different route, but he is not essential. Yet if you kill him you get the same warning. Something Bethesda did not think all the way through I suspect.
