I cant even afford a lot of games and now I cant afford mods either looks like if you love gaming you cant be poor. I mod a lot to keep the very few games I do own enjoyable and I would love to Donate to modders but I cant because I am poor. The moral of the story stop being poor.

From Chesko on Reddit

"I have also requested that the pages for Art of the Catch and Arissa be completely taken down. Valve's stance is that they "cannot" completely remove an item from the Workshop if it is for sale, only allow it to be marked as unpurchaseable. I feel like I have been left to twist in the wind by Valve and Bethesda."

"I was just contacted by Valve's lawyer. He stated that they will not remove the content unless "legally compelled to do so", and that they will make the file visible only to currently paid users. I am beside myself with anger right now as they try to tell me what I can do with my own content. The copyright situation with Art of the Catch is shades of grey, but in Arissa 2.0's case, it's black and white; that's 100% mine and Griefmyst's work, and I should be able to dictate its distribution if I so choose. Unbelievable." ,,

So it begins. Can't say I am that surprised. Just a little. At least I though the modders could dictate the use of their own content. Apparently not.

Perhaps I've been too grim/ cynical about this whole situation. After all, the majority of people I've seen support free modding, and even Dark0ne states he will fight the likely apocalypse/ monopoly of "official" mods that draws ever near.

I must admit, that was my biggest concern. Permanently locking user-created content behind concrete walls will sound the death knoll of modding altogether, and turn it into yet another business (and source of cheap labor). The day this happens is the day I leave the modding community for good.

On a brighter note, it seems like things aren't as dire as they first appeared. The Nexus and other free modding websites are still here, and most people still hold their integrity at heart. Perhaps we can ride the storm, and maybe even kill the concept of payed mods before things get out of hand.

I'll stand beside the Nexus as long as they continue to freely distribute mods, without any payments or strings attached, though I suspect this might become increasingly difficult. This community is one of the best, and I would hate to see it go down. Good luck.

If free sites get screwed over by paid mods, people will always find a way to circumvent and pirate said mods, and glorious shall be the day it happens, and it will happen. Yes, modders do need more appreciation for their hard work, there's no refuting that, but forcing people to pay for mods (many of which are questionable in nature as far as how good they actually are), but cutting 75% of the revenue is just asinine. I really would love to see the paid mods system fail.

and when they day happens, you will be getting your files scanned by valve anti cheat, VAC, for "unauthorized" mods and getting banned, it will happen

Not if I get my mods from Nexus, from here, paid mods be damned. I hope you're not being a sycophant and actually defending the whole paywall BS.

Never thought I would see the day come but this is the beginning of the slow death of this great community.

Anyone that was in the Sims 2 community will remember what is going to happen and I don't think there actually is a way to stop it. Some modders have already had both modders and users turn against them. Some have already placed disclaimers on their mods that their resources are NOT available to anyone using them for pay mods. Some have taken down all their free mods, to sell them and we do not know how far reaching that effect will have on other mods using their resources.

The split has already started and we are only seeing the very first ripple effect.

Will it reach Sims 2 levels? Will personal lawsuits spring up? Will some modders become blacklisted? Even if it doesn't, this, the single best modding community in history has been broken and more than likely it will spread beyond Skyrim to future Bethesda games as well...and go on and take a look at the difference between the Sims 2 community size and that of Sims 3 and 4...it isn't even 1/10th the size.

Poor Bethesda and Valve just couldn't sit by and see all this wonderful "FREE" content being out there and them not making a freakin dime off of it so they had to go and destroy it all because they wanna make money off all the mods when Fallout 4 comes out.

Hopefully though the modding community stands strong and doesn't cave.

Oke yes yes i understand modding TES is a old and great tradition which we all cherry deeply and part of it is that modders share there work on the nexus free and publicly, Then steam game along with there paywall option and some modders decide do actually start charging people for there mods. Now before we start bashing the Modders for choosing to do so look at the facts:

Against pay wall:
1. Modding has always been free.
2. micro transactions are never good
3. Modders have the option to enable being able to receive donations
4. Mod "x" relies on rescources which are not his/hers and yet dares to ask money for them.

For pay wall:
1. We are not privileged to getting free mods, we bought the game that allows gives us the privileged to use/make mods but does not mean every modder now owns us there mod. modders don't own us s*** they choose to share there mod with us and i believe its provided 'as it is' and don't need to meet any criteria.
2. These small money rewards might actually motivate people into doing this the have not prior to getting paid for doing so do. It might make people make better/ContentRicher mods that he/she might not have found worth making in his own free time in exchange for nothing (yes lets call endorsements nothing for now)
3. Making something then allowing everyone to use it with no strings attached is great and while making the thing itself might be called a reward on it self considering you learned and probably enjoyed doing it (most modders mod because the actually enjoy doing so) some might not consider it a reward regardless the fact is that the amount of time/donation is verry low
3. using resources from other modders who have given permission to the modder to do so and including them in your paid-to-get mod is not really a issue since that said modder has not raised objection to this matter.

Please do add more 'cons/pros' and feel free to discuss the already mentioned one.

also: please refrain from bashing the mod author in this thread or as the mods/admins are concerned: on the nexus
