Even with negative press at the launch of the program, even if it only ends up with mediocre "sales", this is nearly cost-free revenue for any publisher and there's not a chance that it will be passed by. Publishers are going to start pressing developers to release mod resource kits with built in DRM / publishing restrictions to tie them to Marketplace (or Origin or Uplay or whatever future services start offering similar options).

The thing that bugs me most is the constant, naive insistence that this "won't change anything". Because it will. It absolutely will. People spouted the same naivety about things like custom maps and skins in FPS games, and look at the state of that genre today. DLC, DLC, DLC, call us next year for your annual paid update.

Nobody should support this its the tolling of the death bells for modding , my work is free for people will always be free and if nexus continues to support this by recieving a cut (and at least makes a stand against it) all my nexus stuff will be removed and i will just open my own site and host my stuff there.

What I am saying now is no satire.

I always preferred Oblivion over Skyrim. I played Oblivion 6 times due to the large number of TCs and game changing mods but I played Skyrim only once, which was actually Falskaar.

Oblivion is still DRM free and most us have it on a physical disk, so MAYBE modders could just ditch Skyrim and stick with Oblivion.

I've often considered that. I own Oblivion, but I've never played it. I'm not a big fan of playing in 1st person, though.

But again, if I'm going to boycott mods from authors who sell out to Steam, I can't be a hypocrite and use their Oblivion mods, either. Edited by phantompally76

Hi,

sorry, if some of my ideas appeared earlier in some other posts, but I won't read the flood of comments that were postet here after my visit yesterday.

And sorry for the wall of text ;-)

1. Some people seem to forget how much of their spare time modders invest in their work.

For larger mods, we are talking of HUNDREDS of hours modding, testing, supporting and bugfixing.

If the modders want some money for it, that's their choice.

BUT I think 25 % cut is not a generous offer from Valve, it's simply an insult for the hard work.

They want 35 % cut (or 30, if modders want to support other platforms like Nexus) for just offering their space? In my opinion not really fair.

And I think giving away 5 % does not hurt them.

2. This is not only a matter of money, but also a juristic issue.

What people tend to forget is that some mods are based on others or include other mods / resources from other mod authors.

Let' take houses as example, which often use clutter created by other modders.

They have their permission for usage, but this does not mean that they have their permission to gain money with it.

Guess we can imagine how those modders think of it: Offered their spare time and others made some cash, partially with their work. Nice.

Another example is:

I have heard of players (perhaps not even modders by themselves) who downloaded mods here for free to sell them on steam without any permission of the author.

I am not familiar with laws of other countries, but in Germany, this is theft of mental property.

AFAIK, Valve refused to delete these mod or repay the money THEY gained with it.

So according to our law here (which does not seem to be similar elsewhere), the person who uploaded the mod at Steam Workshop and even Valve itself would be chargeable for that.

3. I am one of those players (no modder myself) who have round about 100 mods installed.

Some of them are just smaller fixes and patches, other real big ones.

If I had paid only 1 € / $ for each mod, it would have been more expensive than the whole game itself.

And although some modders won't like what I am telling now:

Hardly any of these mods are finished. Some of them have updates every few months.

So if every modder would demand money for his / her work, that would mean paying for every little update, or what?

Another thing is that some mods who are said to be clean, slim and compatible with everything, are in fact NOT.

Me and some friends had issues with a combination of certain mods which actually shouldn't even cross each other. After uninstalling on of the mods, everything was fine again.

Modders can not guarantee that their mod works without any conflicts for everybody.

There are thousands of mods /millions of different mod combinations and they can impossibly test all of them for issues.

If I had paid for those mods which damaged other mods or messed up my save (uninstalled plenty because of that), I would have wanted my money back.

But as we know, Valve won't repay anything, no matter what the mod author says...

Means in other words: If modders want money, they are responsible for a certain quality and not demanding money for "beta" mods or should at least provide bugfixes and patches for free to those who spent money.

If I use a free mod and mess up my game.. well, my problem then, but nothing that can't be fixed.

If I bought a mod and something like that happened because the mod is not clean (not because I was too stupid to install properly, that's my fault then), I'd be quite angry that I paid for it.

4. Bethesda... Bethesda receives a lot as well.

Yes, they developed the game and they provided the CK for everyone to create mods.

But they also abandoned Skyrim long ago, perhaps due to the planning of TESO.

No more support, no fixes, nothing.

We owe thanks to the modders that THEY created patches and bugfixes (actually Bethesda's task) for us.

I think it is ok if Bethesda receives a share of the money as well, but 40 %? Too much. By far too much.

And again, just my point of view about the distribution of the money:

80 % to modders, 5 % to Bethesda, 5% to Valve and per se 10 % as a donation to a platform /developer team of the modder's choice (if the mod requires e.g SKSE or to the USKP team, Nexus, whatever).

I think THAT would be fair.

Greetings,

No, it does not. Do not use me as the poster-child for that campaign as I never said I was.

So you either didn't read it, or you read it, and then decided to say I was painting myself as the "saviour of the free modding community" when I've specifically said I neither am or want to have that title. So yes, you look stupid. Even more so, now.

You can't shrug or laugh this off. This is a MUCH bigger deal than you're trying to make it out to be, and just because you refuse to admit there is a problem with your lack of disclosure and transparancy....that doesn't make the problem go away.

Actually, no he didn't, what you HAVE done though, is shown that twice now, you lack any reading comprehension skills whatsoever, which also explains why you have the whole Valve/Nexus thing so wrong.

Because you read and then interpret everything the way you WANT it to be, rather than the way it actually IS, facts be damned.

Hey, let's see you contribute to the $500,000 annual upkeep for the nexus THAT YOU USE FOR FREE.
You're using a website for FREE and demanding that someone else PAY for something that has already been explained, that all of us adults were able to comprehend quite clearly on our first read-through of Robin's article.
At this point, I can only chalk up your incomprehension of Robin's explanation as, you're either Drunk, or you're now too emotionally invested in this to save face and back out out gracefully by apologizing.

Suppose time will tell but it is somewhat comforting to know that the players at hand here do see the value of the community here. Admittedly it might be money orientated, however we can have the chance to show them there is more to modding than that. HE ONLY BENEFITS.......ONLY, if someone CHECKS THE BOX that says "Send 5% of the earning for this mod to the Nexus", there are also checkboxes to send 5% to the makers of NifSKope and Blender as well.
Why aren't you complaining about those two things possibly getting 5% whenever someone checks the box for them to receive 5% of the income?

If a modder DOESN'T check that box for The NEXUS, or NifSkope etc then the Nexus and NifSkope etc get NOTHING, ZERO, ZIP, ZILCH, NADA, NOTHING, is sent to the Nexus, NOTHING....

They gave us the CS (construction set) for free and allowed and trusted us to mod as a hobby. But we abused that trust and turned it into a business. And so now Big Daddy Bethesda is coming and punishing us by saying , "you want to sell your mods, fine. But now we control everything and we want our cut."

So when Dark0ne says he's neutral, I believe him. I've read his posts, he's never come out against pay4mods, he's only expressed concern about potential issues that could arise from them. He is not taking any modders cuts, and he's not forcing anyone to pay for him, he's merely opted into a voluntary system to help improve the site. If such a time comes when he decides to start charging for access to this site, or allowing mods to make their mods pay for only, then you will have evidence for your claims.

Claims you have made a lot of. You say he wants to be a champion for free mods, but he never claimed that. You state he's angry he didn't get a bigger cut of Valve's profits, but you have no evidence for this claim. You claim he is a troll merely because he pointed out an illogical inconsistency in your argument (in a minor, kind of sort of rude way, which I get and see it as the mistake it was, if only because you'd continue bringing it up.) You claim other people are trolling you when they merely disagree with you. You claim to have fought for this site and free modding, yet you aren't a contributor (neither am I, but I understand this place wouldn't be here without them.) You even claim to be standing up for what you believe in.

There is a difference between standing up for your beliefs and flinging accusations about without proper evidence. You want to question his motives? That's fine, I question the funds of scientific studies all the time, but I always read the study, take in the evidence, and mull it over to see if their are any actual flaws before accusing the study of being a shill for a corporate interest. Forgive me for saying so, but you sound like a religious doomsayer the way you talk. Or like you're a conservative who really hates anything to do with democrats.

If you apply the same argument to yourself as you have to others, then you have called people debating actual points with you "pathetic," just like the guy who "called you stupid." There is nothing troll about people merely disagreeing with you in the same tone you have disagreed with others. If you want to be taken seriously, then debate facts in a clear, respectful manner. If not, have fun with your free nexus account.

While it lasts. Or something.
x9fallen wrote: "This used to be free and fun". And what contributions have you made to the modding community?

Also, it was never free. Hosting files and allowing traffic to and from has a very real cost associated with it. If you don't like the price you have to pay (seeing an ad or two or seeing an option to go premium), don't pay it. See if you can find a community that allows file hosting/download with no cost that you can contribute nothing to. There isn't one. Which is why you'll stay here and continue to whine.

You've offered nothing of substance to the discussion. Your main complaints are that, although facts have been laid out, the author is still trying to deceive the community. You've also inferred the author has called you stupid twice, which is objectively false.

Offering praise and encouragement (and endorsements) to mod authors who might have otherwise given up, and defending mod authors against self-entitled millenials on here who expect them to do whatever they want, when they want.

THAT is my contribution to this community. And whether I have donated one red cent to a single mod author or not, THAT makes me every bit as much a member of the modding community as you. So don't try to lord your premium membership over me or anyone else on here. We are equals.

And the thing is, if you see beyond the face value of the Nexus receiving money from Valve, you will see a huge chunk of the same bile Valve has managed to inject the modding community, and the PC gaming community, with. They did it good, they struck where it mattered and regardless of monetary transactions, it's highly probably modding will never be the same, just remember how well Mr. Gabe managed to avoid Dark0ne's invitation to take an stance against eventually limiting modding to the workshop.

They are in for the greed of it and once they taste the goods, the easy money they are going to earn at the expense of modders, they won't stop until modders become official DLC and bugfixes contractors.

Dark0ne says that only 75 mods have gone in the last 2 days and Nexus still has over 40K mods on the site. However, if the mods can only be on Steam exclusively, whilst charging for the mod, and if Nexus is credited 5% of the mod's price only if the mod is "monetized", then it serves in Darkones interest to have all the mods leave Nexus and be monetized on Workshop.

We have 40K mods remaining as free, but what will happen by next year, 30K? And the year after that, 20K? Eventually, all mods will move to a monetized system on Steam, whist Dark0ne is receiving 5% of 40K mod revenues, all the while, having no reason to host this site anymore, as all the mods have gone. It wouldn't benefit him to have all mods go to the Workshop as he wouldn't have a community anymore, and hence would probably be removed by Valve themselves.

We've lost around 60 such mods so far to Steam Paymods, over 70 mods have been either removed or hidden on nexus out of protest or fear of theft, it's possible that one of the most popular and used Skyrim mods ever has just permanently become abandonware, and mod users (definitely in the hundreds, more likely in the thousands) are boycotting all mods by sellout authors in protest (myself included; I've uninstalled and unendorsed nearly 2 dozen of the mods I've been using for years in order to avoid hypocrisy).

Secondly its not the revenue split that should bother you but the fact that the only way to make money off mods "reliably" is through steam. And from the moment you upload anything to steam, you forfeit any control over the mod. It is now literally the property of valve and bethesda. Yeah moders get a (small) cut of the profits (only if the mod make over $400 otherwise beth/valve keeps all the money) but for all intents and purposes the mod is no longer theirs to do with as they please.
That doesn't sound like a very good deal to me. Edited by popcorn71

No, Dark0ne, this has not surprised me in the slightest at all either. The gaming community as a whole has proven again and again and again that it will gladly pay large sums for little quality in service and product. It is the ideal customer in that it has very poor self control, is not very critical of it's purchase and has too much disposable income (apparently) - the wet dream of every salesman. You people are at least partially at fault that all this is even a thing for being so uncritical of everything. The Internet is great for the decentralization of information and content, and you all flock to one company for all your needs like you did with Steam many years ago and now, where they are pretty much dominating that particular market, you are surprised that they do with you whatever they want because they can? Really? Companies aren't good or evil, they are just interested in one thing and one thing only - Profits. To what lengths they will go for this one goal varies, but experience has shown that Monopolies are always a bad thing for the customer, to a point where they and competition are regulated in many places in the world by the government. I do not know Dark0ne and don't want to paint him in this or that way, but the same also applies to the Nexus. If you don't believe what he has written now, use the Internet. Seek out other modding communities, upload your stuff there if you make mods. Hell, open your own site, it has never been this easy. Don't put all your eggs in one basket out of convenience. Then your online haunts will have competition and will not be able to do whatever they want with you because it actually might affect their business in very bad ways.

On the paid mod thing... Yes, maybe some modders do deserve compensation for their work - But customers (which mod users of paid mods are now, like it or not) also deserve some rights, some basic quality of the product, some assurance that their money was not spent in vain and that the product will also be usable in the future (in future games, that might still be patched when mods come out, where patches often break compatibility) and have certain quality standards. Like it is now, buying mods is an incredibly bad deal for the customer. There are no guarantees, Valve/Bethesda explicitly only cash in and take no responsibility for the product - which quite frankly, is insane. I never heard of anything remotely comparable in any other industry. Hell, I am not even sure if this is legal in all places of the world. I think the fact that traditional lawmaking is often not up to spec with what happens on the internet might be little abused here too, but then again, I am not a lawyer so I might be wrong.

Can a single modder or a group of "unprofessional" modders even offer that kind of quality, transparency and guarantee of intended function to the customer? I think not. I think also this is never a thing that will be possible. So what recourse does the customer have? He doesn't. It's impossible to get your money back if it turns out you don't like the mod and if steam dislikes you giving back mods too often for store credit you can even get banned from the entire service. Which again, is a thing they can effectively threaten with, because they have such a big monopoly. The conclusion is: Basically you are buying your mods from Valve/Bethesda a big, professional company and not some lemonade stand - "as is". Again, I am no lawyer - but I am not even sure this is legal either in many places of the world. The customer is pretty much ripped off here and honestly, people deserve to be pissed at that.
