What about using Magical PERKS?

Whether or not VATS is added to Skyrim (and I hope they do it), I hope Bethesda adds MAGICAL PERKS that work, much like Fallout 3 Perks.

 

Some perks could be almost the same, such as headshots in VATS , "Educated" when you read a skill book, etc. Perhaps a PERK might be necessary to open up the ability to do really fancy stuff, such as combat casting of 2 spells in the same round in VATS on 2 different opponents.

 

Anyone else's thoughts? I love Fallout 3's cinematic effects when there is a critical hit and know it would look even more awesome in slow motion with VATS and PERK effects added. Imagine the slow-mo effect of a fireball or lighting bolt storm or an ice storm with ice rocks bouncing off dudes and knocking them down.

Actually, that's not a bad idea. Adding perks (if you've ever played D&D, feats) would certainly be a new, interesting layer for Skyrim. However, that would be a lot of new work for Bethesda, because they would have to balance out each and every perk. Although, they wouldn't necessarily have to be magical; a perk just represents a new ability gained by the player.

Adding Perks might not be a bad idea, however, when you think about it, the idea started in Oblivion, with the rewards for reaching apprentice, journeyman, etc. So since Oblivion had perks like that, I think that Skyrim probably will, but I doubt it'll be perks like the fallout level up perks.

I agree, adding perks may be a not bad idea, but the all perks must be an side-effect, no target, intention, or purpose of effort. So there will be a problem finding the right balance in the computer game.

In one of table D&D type game we called them the "authoritative spells" or "special ability" - and it was very difficult obtain this benefit even for a single spell (or ability). It was a reward for the use of spells (or ability) very imaginative and unusual way/manner.

If given enough time, they can balance out pretty much everything (and if there's anything unbalanced, there will almost definitely be a mod that fixes it). The whole point is to add extra special abilities that you can choose, instead of just increasing skills (and the benefits that come with, like DagonTheranis said). So, unless there's a reason besides the risk of unbalancing things, I say go for it.

The 'perks' thing is exactly the sort of enhancement idea I would want.

 

I agree, just upskilling isn't enough... but, I also don't want it to be merely a level acquired thing, similar to DnD, and other MMO's. If you get a perk, you need to have deserved it and sought it out... and it should be special and, in some ways, makes your character unique.

 

One thing I've disliked about many games (especially MMO's - which I can see may happen with Skyrim - unless it's been specifically stated otherwise), is the cookie-cutting. If you're a warrior, you have XYZ abilities. If you're a healer, you have ABC talents.... blech!!!!!

 

I want everyone to be unique... and if you get a group together, you don't just say "I want a tank and a healer", and know exactly what you've got. Obviously, there will be a lot of similarities, but a L25 healer can have lots in Resto, as well as Alt and Alch...but another one might have Resto, with Heavy Armour and Block, while another one might also be Destruction....

 

When I PnP'ed, it was with Runequst - no classes, all skill based. I prefer that sort of RPG, but I also like 'perks'...
