The Extra Gum Advertisement

Please get rid the "Extra -- give Extra get Extra" advertisement. It starts playing extremely loud music as soon as the page finishes loading, not when you mouse over it like it's supposed to happen. I really don't want to use adblock on this site, but having ads that immediately start playing sound upon the page loading is a pretty good way to get people to start using adblock on your site. Not trying to be a dick here, I just don't want to have to use adblock here because of this one really annoying ad.

The Nexus has no control over what advertisements you are seeing. This is all controlled by a third party and they are tailored to where you are receiving them. The ads that you are getting will be different from those that I may be seeing. What you need to do is try to get a screenshot of the offending ad and post it with your complaint so that the site owner (Dark0ne) can request that it be removed by the ad service.

But they DO have control over what ad provider they use, they should be using one that uses proper ads and not one that uses auto playing video ads. I too do not want to block ads on this site since it provides a great service and i can't afford to pay for premium but i have absolutely zero tolerance for video ads, especially ones that auto play WITH audio and will open up again even after closing it.

"Can't afford" £1.29 (US$2.00) to make a one-time contribution and become a "Supporter"?!?

You have my sympathies.

supporter or not, that ad is crazy. it covers up half the screen as it unrolls to show its soul-crushing movie, plays the same loud music, and opens multiple times per page. when you're trying to look at a mod, you can't see anything until the ad deigns to roll itself back up again. clicking it to make it go away doesn't make it go away half the time. evil, it is. i don't dare open more than one page anymore because it's on every page. and even if i only open one page, then it sometimes opens a couple per page. had 7 the other day, all lined up at the bottom. it made me cry like a 3yr old.

ads aren't the problem. we're all used to spam and banners. and i'm not worried by them. i admit sometimes clicking them (what the hell, i have a virus scanner) but this extra one - man. i've been on the internet since it was essentially dos bulletin boards. i've seen a lot of annoying spam, including the old punch me spam banners. but this extra gum thing? wow. it breaks my spirit.

as to why i'm not a member and pay the $2? had nothing to do with the ads. i didn't know you actually HAD the option to pay without the ads. $2 is nothing, and i'd have considered it. but, reading your response as a staff rep of the site to the OP's frustration at being bombarded with a truly horrendous piece of spam, i hesitate to consider it if that's the prevailing attitude of staff. i'm a little disappointed that nexus' official response was one of snark and general amusement at its sudden attack of its visitors via extra gum ads designed to make me want to break my keyboard across my face. so disappointed that this is my first post to the forums, i believe. if you despise us quiet lurkers so much, i'd be afraid what you'd do with us if you had our credit card details, too.

on the plus side, your response gave me a real stab in the feels. reminded me of 1990s newsgroups when you tried to say hello and some neckbeard always said, "go read the faq" before mocking your username and calling you a noob because you dared to ask a question without first jumping through a complicated and occultish initiation period.

god, i hated those newsgroups.

None of the authorized ad suppliers are supposed to do any of what you describe. So far, you are the only one seeing this. And if it was being seen by a lot of people we would be getting a flood of complaints. Advertising is targeted by demographics as well as location, so they try to send ads that they think fit your specific demographics ( age, occupation, sex, and interests) They got a lot of information about you from sites like Facebook where you trade your private information for being able to use their site. FB then sells that info to the advertisers, scammers and anyone else who is willing to pay. One of the results is you get targeted ads.

We really do need a screen capture of the ad so we can identify it. Without that picture, we don't know where it could be coming from and so cannot get it removed.

If you really want to get rid of it please send a screen capture to Dark0ne so he can file a complaint with the relevant ad supplier for violating the ad agreement.

As for the comment on just change the ad supplier. It's not the 3rd party supplier. it is a rouge advertiser that changes their ad after the ad they proposed to the supplier was approved. The supplier just bans them, and a week later they sign up as a new account and do it again. EVERY ad supplier has this problem. some more than others.

Note that Nexus does not either collect or sell your information. We do not sell our list of users, emails or even usernames.

I have my reasons and they are none of your business, not everyone can afford to throw "just $2" on every site or thing they look at or use on top of the price of games and many other things. Not to mention the fact i don't come to this site often, the other day was the first time i came back here in like a year and a half and was immediately greeted with this ad.

As for a picture of the extra gum ad, that one doesn't come up anymore but i still get video ads (luckily these ones are muted by default). I would appreciate straight up static banner ads over video ads. It has to be the provider you are using, i have used many sites with ads enabled and rarely if ever get video ads. I came back to this site after a while because i wanted to check out the various mods since it has been a while since i last played but was immediately greeted with said ad and every single ad on the site is a video ad.

I am not trying to sound ungrateful or be a you know what but i seriously despise video ads, they are the sole reason i use adblock in the first place.

We despise them also. Video ads and audio over ads are not supposed to be shown on Nexus sites - ever!

As I already said - we NEED a screencap to identify where they are coming from. Also, so far, you are the only one of millions of users here that has reported these particular ads. Typically with bad ads, we see lots of reports from other users as well. Because ads are targeted, we, (the staff) do not see the same ads as every user. And every user, even those living in the same locale may not see the same ads.
