PC setup for Fallout 3 and New Vegas modded heavily

Ok. Ill probably just save up for the GTX 980. Im looking at cases right now. Does anyone know kf a case that has ample room, a viewing window on at least one side, and can fit all of the parts in OP and cooling comfortably?

GTX 970 is almost the same thing and a lot cheaper. There's very little reason to buy a 980 today, it's basically just a statement that you have extra cash. And what difference a 980 makes over a 970 is in other games, like Crysis and whatnot; Fallout 3 is CPU bound, so a 970 will be just as fast.

 

Fractal Define S Window would be the case to get, or optionally the older Define R5.

Alternately look at Xigmatek Elysium for a larger more SLI oriented option.

Ok thanks. After looking, the 970 is the same but cheaper. Ill be getting that now. Thanks alot! A 970 wont make a difference in mods right? Ot has the same VRAM but I wanted to be ultra sure.

Any specific reason why you'd like to buy an old i5-3570k + Z77 mainboard (released in 2012) instead of the newer i5-4690k + Z97 mobo?

No not really. I have looked and seen things but I dont know enough to know that a 4690k and Z97 are newer than a 3570k and Z77. Sorry Im a complete and utter noob but I dont know a whole lot.

No worries, the 3570K is still a good CPU (out of the box there's maybe 10-15% difference to the 4690K), but as prices for new ones are basically the same - at least over here in Germany, don't know for other parts of the world - there's not much sense in buying these old CPUs, unless you're going for a used one.

 

Yes, the case will hold everything. Cheaper ones like the Defines you mentioned would be fine too, but if you like the Corsair go for it. ;)

 

And please make sure to buy a decent PSU, not some over-labeled $30 Ultr4 Gam3r Powaaa piece of junk from the local DIY store. :devil:

Ok thanks! I didnt know the differences but thanks for pointing them out! And here in the U.S it seems to be the same. The 35 and 4670k are about the same.

 

I think Ill get the case I linked and throw somw cranked up fans in them. I didnt that with my RGH'ed 360 and its loud but it didnt get hot(hot, like beyond warm) until after 8 hrs. Ill throw in the fans and then some cooling on the GPU os I can since its the most stressed in the setup I want.

If you plan to overclock, consider the 4690K rather than the 4670K. It's better at that, not by a lot, but enough to justify the premium.

The Define is not really a "cheap case". It's a high quality case that's got almost as good cooling and considerably better noise suppression than the 760T. For most practical reasons, I'd take the Define XL; you can run the fans higher for better cooling and still have a reasonably quiet PC. But if looks matter and one likes a specific case, sure, the 760T works fine too.

Am I a big kid now? it seems like I have everything except for cooling for OC but that is coming far from now or when I even build it. Fans are another thing but I may have some good ones at the house. I will most likely crank them up really high since the noise doesnt really affect me a all. My RGH'd 60 has 2v fans cranked up to 12v constant and it is what you would call loud but it doesnt even register in my head for me.

I read up on motherboards and found out the the only differences between the Z87 and Z97 is that the Z97s can work with the newer Broadwell processors and SATAexpress. Would it be worth it to just buy a Z97 for future proofing and having a motherboard for a newer build if I did one?

The 4690K is what I was talking about anyway.

And for the case: I didn't mean to say that the Define is a "cheap" case. It was meant in comparison to the Graphite 760T, which costs roughly twice. I use the Define R4 in my desktop PC, and I really love this case. :smile:

The CPU in your list is the regular i5-4690, which cannot be overclocked. For OC you'd need the 4690K, a Z97 mainboard and a decent CPU fan. Z87 doesn't make sense anymore, as the Z97 costs the same but features some improvements (some of which you already mentioned).

If you don't plan to overclock, you could also go for cheaper H97 or B85 mainboards.
