FWE followers enhanced

I've got followers enhanced plugin active on FWE and in game I can use the headset it gives, to give special commands to Dogmeat. But outside GNR Dogmeat just got killed against the behemoth. Now I did read in the read-me that some changes don't apply to Dogmeat - is he not essential with this mod. And if not, will marking Dogmeat as essential via console turn him into an immortal killing machine (I don't want that) FWE makes followers go down for 90secs if defeated before getting back up, I like this idea and want Dogmeat doing this too. Thanks
