I downloaded the following free sample from 3D max swat character s.w.a.t.

Running it in 3ds max works fine with all its textures.

To make it run in my game I have to export it into 3DS (3D studio) or OBJ (Wavefront Object).

Exporting to 3DS. All goes well apart from this error message.

I have a feeling that this error is the cause of my problem. Because as far as I know 3D studio does not support DDS files it supports BMP or JPG for its textures right?

Also tried OBJ (Wavefront Object) unfortunately same bad result.

End result in the game is a blank puppet without skin or any colours.

No texture visible. I confirmed it when running the swatguy in Milkshape it still does not have any skin or clothes. There is no texture included logical that it appears like a blank puppet in game.

So it is obvious that something has to be done to the file “swat_diff.dds” when converting the MAX file into OBJ or 3DS.

Please help. The once that help out will be credited in the game if it ever gets finished.

Well, you could edit the material file (accompanies the OBJ file) and change the texture names back to the correct name or you can rename your actual texture files to match the forced 8.3 naming convention. Or you could correct the paths to the texture files once you get them imported into your next program. I'm sure the texture links are there...they just need to point to a valid path/filename.

  • 1 month later...

3DS Max will support DDS but you need a plugin to do it, I will look into where I got it from and edit my post.
