How Exactly to install/where to install OBMM

Okay, this is probably a very stupid mistake on my part... I'm using the game with Steam, because I couldn't buy a hardcopy of the game... it vanished from the face of the earth apparently...

anyways, I was wondering, I used 7zip to unzip the OBMM folder, and doubleclicked the OBMM app file that I downloaded from this site. Everything's fine until the program asks me to pick a folder to install the program into. I have no idea where i'm supposed to put this and thereis no readme in the folder for OBMM otherwise I would have read it. It says I need to put it into the oblivion install directory... what exactly am I supposed to do to install the OBMM?

The 'Oblivion Install Directory' Means the folder that the Oblivion is installed in (Directory=Folder) - look for a file called Oblivion.exe (NOT the ESM or ESP) and put it in the same folder.

personally I like to use the regular (non-Steam) version of Oblivion. Not all features will work with steam, some you need a separate steam version (obse needs a steam loader).

On the other hand, I hear that steam cleaned up the code and made this game as well as fallout3 more stable... Your decision really needs to balance these two factors. If you wish to use mainly vanilla and replacers, you should be fine with steam. If you wish to get heavy into modding and/or are using OBSE, etc, I would recommend the retail version.

You're just contributing to the problem by stating stuff like this, spreading rumors.

The STEAM version works perfectly with all mods, just the same as the disc version. The only difference is you need one additional file for OBSE, which is included in the archive. Otherwise it doesn't matter if you have vanilla, 10 mods, 50 mods, or 300 mods, the two versions work EXACTLY the same. ALL mods and utilities work as intended with the STEAM version. I'm not sure why so many people think otherwise. It's been proven time and time again that the STEAM version is 100% compatible with anything the disc version is, and it's just as capable.

The STEAM version is not, and never will be, the cause for your modding, or vanilla, Oblivion troubles.

I guess all these myths come from posts like the above where people are uninformed and spreading false information instead of actually researching the issue. Remember if you're not 99% sure of what you're saying then it's best not to say anything in situations like this.

  • 8 months later...

ok so i recently got a new hdd and i loaded up my obmm installer.

i am using steam, and i figured out the problem you are having.

the string looked like this.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\oblivion\New Folder

and i figured out that you have to remove the new"new folder" so it looks like this

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\oblivion.

btw. im using windows 7 x64, so my string may look different from the ones in xp and vista(and maybe even win7 x32)

hope this helps.
