Are the Mods on TESNexus compatible with Steam?

I've just built a brand new computer, and one of the reasons I built it is because I want mods for my games, especially for Oblivion. I've been a huge fan since it came out, and only now am I going to experience it on the PC. Truth be told, I'm excited, but, also a bit weary. I have Steam, and have already gotten several games through it. I was wondering, however, can I still DL and install mods from Nexus while playing the game through Steam? If so, how? If not, should I just purchase the Disc version of the GOTY edition?

Well I think it should be compatible :D

I have a disk version so I dont know how does Steam affect the game itself but if there are any problems with the game and you dont want to use Steam just to play it,than just Cut and Paste the game folder on the desktop or in your C drive and use xFire if you want to count your game hours :D

You should be able to download and install most mods with the instructions that the mods provide in their readme's and run from Steam. Several people here do.

purchase the steam game of the year deluxe so u get all the dlc, and yes mods are compatible with steam. just make sure that when you install OBSE (oblivion script extender) you follow the instructions for the steam version Edited by MajorKiller

The mods are all absolutely compatible - However to make things easier be sure to install the steam client outside of the default location. If you just accept the default it puts steam in the UAC protected 'program files' folder - not a good place.

instead, install in a separate folder. I use C:\Games\Steam. Then all steam games will install there. And no hassle with UAC.

Non steam games get put in C:\Games\Game-Name

I do not recommend disabling UAC as that leaves a back door open for certain viruses.

Thanks much to those who have replied. Two things, then:

How do I install my games outside of the default directory? I have games waiting to install, and I'd like to know how to put them in a separate folder. Also, I've just DLed L4D2, and it's in the default directory. Is there a way to get put it in another place, or should I just copy and paste the folder? I ask because I also want to DL user created maps for it. I know it's not about Oblivion, sorry about that. It's just that I'm mostly new to PC Games. My old system couldn't handle anything worthwhile.

Second, the script extender comes with the game, right? Anything I specifically need to do with that?

I wouldn't bother with it and just turn UAC off, it's a useless feature but if you really want to install outside of steam directory then here http://www.themoreuknow.net/blog/blog/archive/2007/09/29/moving-your-steam-install/ I'd say it's more trouble than its worth though.

also do not copy and past the folder, you will have to re-install it but you can still download and play user created maps in the default directory.

and finally no, OBSE does not come with oblivion but you can get it here http://obse.silverlock.org/

happy modding :)

How do I turn UAC off?

And, so, I can just DL the mods/maps into the (insert game here) folder within Steam?

My Steam folder doesn't have my username in it, it just says "common," and it leads into my games. Is that normal?

So incredibly sorry if I'm being a dip****.

I strongly recommend that you do not turn off the UAC. It is protecting your operating system from infection by certain kinds of malware. It's Windows; it needs all the protection it can get. :)

Don't turn off UAC. Take the safe approach and follow Bben's advice of installing to an alternate location. You can follow the information on Moving your STEAM Installation to avoid having to completely re-install and re-download all of your games.

Yes, the common folder is the normal place for games not produced by VALVe.
