Missing sounds in dialouges after adding new race mods in non english

Recommended Posts

hey guys, please don´t be put off(hoping for right expression here) by the long post. You could read the description, check the link and jump to the "nutshell"part...

Problem Description:

I´m using the german version of Oblivion and wanted to add some race mods, specifically, Xenius Race Compilation and Rens Beauty Pack which adds some elven race.

Once I try to start a new game with these mods active, almost any NPC keeps silent, meaning in the beginning the king and his guards aren´t speaking(if I remember correctly) and if I go into dialouge I can read the text, but don´t hear the NPCs talking.

Own Research:After quite a while I found following link. Except that I found no other solution(yes, I used the search-function here though I think I lack the fantasy to come up with few words describing my problem)

http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Fix_dialogues_in_localized_non_english_versions

The problem appears to be quite common, but I wanted to know if anyone of you had expierience fixing this bug. The reason is quite plausible, according to the link:

The race mods are changing the references to the voicing because the folders(or rather BSAs) containing the dialouge sounds are split into races and for some reason the folders are named differently in the german version than they are in the english. You might want to read the source for further explaining.

Question:

I split into three cases:

1) Voices files provided not in a bsa package, like Ungarion Memoirs.

Simply copy the files into the correct path. If you're skilled in NTFS file system you can use Junction Points or Hard Link folder tree clones, saving disk space.

2) Voices files provided in bsa files.

Unpack bsa file contents and copy into the right folder. It's not necessary to repack the bsa (*), but it can be done as well.

3) Mod changes [race name] entries, like elaborate eyes.

Unpack "Oblivion - voices1.bsa" and "Oblivion - voices2.bsa" and copy the files into the right folder. Even if it requires a lot of space I would not recommend moving the files to right path and repack the bsa overwriting vanilla Oblivion default files, as if you decide to remove the mod you'll have to revert the process. I suggest to generate a third Oblivion - voices bsa (**),(***) file to be compatible with and without the changing race mod active.

First off, I don´t know if this will solve the bug for new races, actually, I couldn´t imagine how as new races are new entries and don´t change entries for existing mods, am I right?

And before I question the 3 fixes: Couldn´t I just unpack the german Voices1+2.BSAs, rename the german race folders into the english original ones, then repack the BSAs and be done with it? Wouldn´t that fix all future problems or are the filenames also different in german and english version? Changing all those would be most likely more complicated than always changing the mod entries...

@ quote:

What is the correct path? What do I have to copy to where exactly? Can´t I rename wrong race folder names into the matching german ones? And would the ESPs still find the files?

I don´t get the part with NTFS at all, though I´m ..."advanced" in operating the windows GUI... I thought. I don´t get what junction points(another word for shortcut, like shortcut to desktop?) or hard link folder tree clones are or why I should need them. I thought I just had to change some folder names or copy somethings, that would have made sense... What do I have to do here? Please clarify.

On third reading it appears I have to make the changes from english to german(in my case) in the .ESP file of the mod. Is there another tool than the TES-Construction Set for modifying .esp files?

In a nuthshell: I would love to know how to fix the "silent dialouge bug".... and if the solution in the link is correct then: what files do I have to copy from where to where and do I have to change ESPs or not? And if I could just rename german vanilla voices.bsa race folders into english, as suggested above.

If there is an easier way to fix this(maybe a mod changing vanilla- file and foldernames or something like that) I would appreciate a hint.

I hope this topc didn´t exist already with a great solution, as said, I used the not so userfriendly search-option.(I understand the reason for the 20 sec wait time though)

If there is a clear solution for this problem I would like to change this thread to a tutorial so everyone having the same problem may find an easy and understandable solution.

PS: If I expressed myself unclearly, please give me a hint and I try to clarify

In my voices2.bsa and voices2.bsa there are entries for the following races:

hochelf

argonier

dremora

nord

rothwardone

kaiserlicher

here is my first problem, the english foldernames are(I ordered them so they match the order above):

High Elf

Argonian

Dremora

Nord

Redguard

Imperial

Breton

In my german .bsa files I couldn´t find an entrie for the Breton Race even though it exists ingame. Maybe the folder was fused into either the "Kaiserlicher" or in the "Nord" folder, like all the elven races are fused in the "High Elf" folder. Does anyone know?

Next problem:

Rens Beauty Pack has a Meshes and a Textures folder and an .esp file. In neither of the 2 folders there are entries for sounds nor Race names. The subfolder is named "Ren" and in there are the hair styles I guess.

I guess the problem lies somewhere in the .esp file. I opened it with the TES-CS and set it as active file. Now to the left there is a browsing menu. And in one of the submenus I can see the english race names.

BUT when I open Oblivion.esm and go into the same submenu I got the same english race names.

Have you translated Ren's Beauty Pack plugin? It also changes vanilla races, so translation will be needed.

Where do I have to translate? In the .esp of the Beauty Pack? If yes then where exactly(which subfolder) and how? It doesn´t appear to be possible in the TES-CS

Edit: I found a Race option under Character in the CS. Now in rens beauty pack the EditorID AND the name of every race is english

in oblivion.esm the EditorID is english and the name is german.

I can however only change the ID and not the name in rens beauty pack... any hint?
