Any decent "coercer" mods?

I know there are a lot of mods that let you command creatures or monsters to a certain extent, and plenty of summons out there, but none of them quite manage to deliver the experience that MMO's like Everquest 2 give you if you are a "coercer". In EQ, you find a powerful animal, take control of it, then basically command and heal it till it's either dead or the control is broken. You don't have much control over your "commanded" creatures in vanilla Oblivion, it sort of sucks that there doesn't seem to be a way to heal or buff your "pet" once they are under your command. Are there any mods out there that do anything like this? I haven't had any luck searching for them so far.

On the healing/buffing side of things, Supreme Magicka has a number of spells to heal and fortify on target. Holy Bolt is my favorite heal on target spell. It works on companions, your horse, or that guard that ran in front of you during battle at the wrong moment. It also harms undead.

Well that's helpful healing-wise, but I'm still lacking the sort of control I'd like to see available for controlled animals. The ability to specify a target for attack, the ability to tell the animal to remain docile around targets it might normally attack, and the ability to heal the creature were all things I'd like to see in a mod yet.

majikmonkee, if I understand what you're saying, it sounds like you want an animal companion that you can control...just like many of the companion mods, but with finer control. AFAIK, that hasn't been done. Furthermore, I doubt that you would have much control anyway, since the game AI makes decisions on who to attack etc. I've seen control where you can basically adjust the level of aggression, but that only elevates or lowers the companion's rage. If it isn't directly scripted, I don't think that it is feasible to have such fine control over a companion (beast or not).

Yeah, it is kind of requesting complete control over companions, in this case, animals, and to a degree that I don't think has been done or may be reasonable to expect from Oblivion. My original idea was to have some sort of a pop up menu that let you select different "states" for your controlled animal (follow me, stay, attack enemies, attack on command). That part has already been done with partners, I was envisioning maybe having a staff or item where you would target the enemy you wanted to attack and "fire" the weapon to send your pet after it, where normally your pet would just remain at your side even if enemies were nearby. I'm not counting on this to be created if it hasn't been already, you pretty much answered my question, so I appreciate it.

There is a mod that lets you have CM companions who are animals. You've probably already seen that one, but I'll track it down if not. Unfortunately it only uses the standard companion dialogues and commands. Only difference is the NPC's an animal and not a person. I don't think there are any mods that give you finer control than that, for beast or humanoid.

Also ran across this: Frostcrag Familiars. Again, not precisely what you're looking for, but might be the closest mods have come so far.

Shadow Ranger meets some of your requirements as regards finer animal control. However it is confined to special animal companions and you may not want all the ranger/role-play stuff that comes with it. I played it a long time ago and it's good. I did have my companion vanish at one point though this may have been a conflict rather than a bug.

| Animal Companion

|

| Tricks/Abilities

|

==================

Early in your Ranger career you will acquire a Wolf, Panther, or

Bear companion, a steadfast friend and ally. As you grow in level and power, you

will be able to teach your companion a variety of tricks and tasks. As you level

your animal will be able to learn increasingly advanced tasks.

The leveling system has been adjusted with game balance in mind, so that in

early stages of the game the companion isn't too powerful, and as you reach high

levels it still proves to be an excellent addition to your party.

To train your companion, simply talk to him. You will receive 4 Training

Points at level 1, thereafter you'll receive 2 Training Points per level.

Depending on trick level, it either costs 1 point [basic Tricks], 2 points

[Mid-Level Tricks] or 3 points [Advanced Tricks]. Also note that Mid-level and

Advanced tricks usually have prerequisites. For instance, to train your

companion to "Heel"(Mid-level trick), it must first know "Come" and "Stay".

Trick Commands break down roughly into three types: Modes [M], Interrupts

and toggles [T]:

-Mode is a behavior type that is persistent; i.e. your wolf will continue doing this thing until you command it to go into another mode or

issue an interrupt command.

-An interrupt is an action that, when completed or

ended, will cause your wolf to go into default follow mode.

-Toggles are

independent of modes or interrupts, they are always on if turned on or always

off if turned off. If you use a toggle command, you will get a message at the

top left of your screen to indicate whether you've turned the toggle on or off.

Commands can be hotkeyed just like spells and issued with the C key likewise.

---

Basic Tricks:

- Withdraw :

Withdraws in the direction you indicate and stays there for a time.

- Come :

Comes to you and stops.

- Stay [M]:

Stays in place until you break the command.

- Attack :

Attacks the target you indicate.

---

Mid-Level Tricks:

- Heel [M]:

Remains by your side at all times.

- Play Dead :

Feigns death, tricking enemies into leaving it alone.

- Defend Me [T]:

High Aggression -

defends you against all attackers and will chase fleeing enemies.

Low Aggression -

Will not initiate combat until enemies are within striking distance of player

or follow fleeing enemies.

- Defend Other [M]:

Stays with and defends the person/creature you indicate.

- Down :

Breaks off from combat and backs down (enemies will not attack).

- Stand Guard [M]:

Stays in place, attacking any apparent enemies that approach.

---

Advanced Tricks:

- Scout [M]:

Will scout ahead of you as you travel, alerting and guiding you to

potential enemies.

- Guard Area [M]:

Roams an area, attacking apparent enemies.

- Hold Fast [T]:

Will not run when life is threatened.

- Sneak: [T]

Trains your wolf in the use of its stealth abilities.

Activated when companion observes you sneaking.

* Turns no refraction stealth ability on/off for companion and player.

---

Special:

- As You Will [T]: Your companion will choose its behavior based on what tricks it knows and

what you're currently doing. If you are sneaking and you've trained your

companion in stealth, it will also sneak. If you've trained your companion to

defend you, it will defend you, etc.

NOTE: 'The As You Will' command is special. If a command you give doesn't

conflict with what your wolf wants to do, he'll do it, otherwise it will ignore

your order and do what it wants to do.

| Animal Companion

|

| Important Notes

|

==================

Right now the companion can't die. I don't like the idea of your companion dying randomly to falls, traps, and other things that can't be controlled in a

real-time setting. If the companion were to be able to die, I'd want it to be

because the player knew the risks and took the chance.

Your companion will refuse to attack a creature if your animal is low on health,

it's their instinct. you're going to need to train him not to follow his instincts in

order to keep that behavior from happening [the 'Hold Fast' command].

If your animal companion has not been taught and issued the "Defend Me"

command, he will not defend you automatically. You will also not be able to

train the "Defend Me" command at the beginning of your career(see the in-game

Command descriptions for prerequisite info); therefore, I would advise you to

make "Attack" one of your first training choices.

Your companion, like others of its kind, is exceedingly skilled at stealthy

movement and stalking. As your follower, however, it will not use those

abilities unless you've trained it to understand how and when a Ranger uses

stealth. After you have trained your companion in this way, it will be able to

use its stealth abilities on command; or alternatively, when under the "As You

Will" command, your animal will sneak when it observes you doing so.

==================

|

| Additional Notes

|

==================

Note that from the moment you select your companion, to the moment where the

companion will actually show up around you may be some 60 seconds, so don't go

panicking that it isn't there. Once it arrives, a message ontop of a screen will

appear, encouraging you to speak to it and spells/powers/commands will be added

shortly after.

Additionally, if you are using existing savegame the spells/powers/commands/

abilities/bonuses/perks/creature level will be calculated and added

accordingly. If you use a savegame where your level is above 25, you will

receive them all.

Currently there isn't a way to rename a companion via companion menu. It is on

to-do list, but for now to give your companion a custom name press ~ to access

console, click on your companion with mouse pointer and type in

SetActorFullName "what name you want"

| FAQ /

|

|==================

Q. How do I start the mod?

A: When you first enter the Tamriel worldspace you will receive a quest message

stating that you should find the Ranger Camp (located SW of Skingrad).

When you arrive at the camp locate the Shadow Master, he will automatically initiate a conversation

with you, after which you will be able to select which components of the mod you would like to activate.

Q: How do I choose the animal companions (Wolf, Bear, & Panther)?

A: You can pick from any of the three after you speak with the Shadow Master.

Additionally, you will be granted the "Summon Animal Companion" power at level 9.

This will give you the ability to switch to any of the additional companions (once per day).

Q: where my companion? He is not appearing!

A: This could be due to two things.

1. Sometimes it can take up to a few minutes for the companion to appear. You can use "fast travel"

to make him appear faster.

2. The meshes and texture files have not been loaded correctly.

Q: If I use your version of this mod, is the Shadow Ranger an alternative to the original Ranger,

or does it replace the original (i.e., do I have to be a Shadow Ranger? Maybe I'm not evil)?

A: yes, you need to replace the original "The Complete ranger" It adds new spells, abilities,

weapons, and fixes.

You can play as a normal ranger as well, the mod doesn't change your class, only gives you spells,

abilities, and items based on a shadow ranger.

How evil you are depends on what exactly you think a "shadow Ranger" is.

Q: How do I find the Ranger Rings?

A: The Ranger Rings are granted to you at various levels, you will need to find the Shadow Master

when you receive a message that your training has been completed (level 8 and 14).

Q: Where do I find the Bow, Blades, Armor, and Arrows?

A: They are located at the "Ranger Camp" SE of Skingrad, you should have an icon on your map.

They are in the Shadow Masters leveled lists and will not begin appearing until level 6.

Q: What effect does the Ranger Knife have?

A: The Ranger Knife has a random chance of the players "Blade Skill" being added to the damage of the attack.

Q: What effect does the Shadow Knife, Blade, and Sword have?

A: These weapons perform the following effects:

Additional Damage: Extra damage based on your level.

Backstab: Multiplier based on your Sneak and Blade Skills.

Assassination: Instantly Kills your enemy.

*

* You must be in Sneak mode and not detected to perform these actions.

Q: What effect does the Shadow Bow and Stealth Mirage Bow have?

A: The Bows have three effects:

Extra Damage: multiplier based on your Agility and Marksman skills.

Critical hit: Increased multiplier based on your Agility and Marksman skills.

Kill Evil: Instantly Kills any evil character.

Q: What effect does the cloaks of camouflage have?

A: The camouflage effect is an increase to your attack bonus.

As you gain higher levels the damage you will deal out will increase as well.

The increase your receive is only a 1st strike bonus. After you are engaged in combat you loose all buffs.

The penalty to wearing the cloak is that your defensive bonus is reduced. So while you will be more likely to do

serious damage to your emnemies during the 1st strike, you will be at a disadvantage in sustained combat.
